The Parish of Our Lady of the Assump"on was established on June 15, 1929 by the Most Reverend Thomas E. Molloy. Ground was broken for the “Basement” Chapel on October 14, 1929 on land donated by Mr. John Cam‐ pagnoli, a real estate agent with offices in Manha!an and Copiague. His ads in the newspaper said that Copiague was “an Italian village, close to the sea with jobs, water, gas, a school and the railroad.” It was Mr. Campagnoli who invited Guglielmo Marconi to visit Copiague, then Marconiville, in 1917. Father Del Vecchio supervised the buildings as we know them today. He wrote to Monsignor James H. Griffiths in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1942 to tell him about Copiague. The Monsignor had agreed to come to preach at the Dedica"on ceremony on July 5, 1942. The dedica"on of a church is a very much celebrated "me for Catholic Churches around the world. If anyone is interested, please call Deacon Phil at the Rectory (842-5211, ext. 29) JUNE 30, 2013 Page 4 Our Lady of the Assumption Registration for the 2013-2014 School Year We are preparing for the 2013-2014 Religious Education school year and the registration process will be getting underway shortly. At this time, you should be aware of the following: • Classes for the upcoming year will begin on Tuesday, October 1, 2013. • Religious Ed registration (and re-registration) will be conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from July 16 through September 19. In July, office hours will be 2 PM to 5:30 PM. Hours for August and September will be different; they will be announced at Mass and published in the Church Bulletin. • All registration (and re-registration) must be done in person. You will complete a standard form for our records. There will be NO registration by mail this year. • If you are NOT a member of this parish, you must bring proof of membership at another parish; this is usually in the form of a church offering envelope, which has your name and number printed on it. • Registration Tuition Fee: Individual (1 child) $120 Family (2 or more children) $150 • Fees must be paid by check or in cash when you come in to register. There will be no refund of the fees once classes have begun. If you are registering for the first time: * Please bring your child’s Baptismal Certificate so we can make a copy for our records. This is necessary even if your child was baptized at OLA. (If your child has never been baptized, please bring the Birth Certificate.) ∗ If your child has already received First Communion, please bring the First Communion Certificate (or other documentation) showing this. This is a great way to become more involved with your parish. PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN VIRTUS TRAINING for OLA Volunteers, will be offered on July 25, 2013, in the Lower Church Hall from 6:45pm - 9:45pm. Register on-line at www.drvc.org Virtus On-line. OUTREACH The Food Pantry needs some more milk, canned fruit, instant potatoes, spaghetti sauce and cereal to put on the shelves. We could also use macaroni and cheese and tuna fish. Dariusz and the campaign committee wish to thank all parishioners who have responded to the campaign. Soon follow-up activities will begin, including mailings and phone calls to those who have not had an opportunity to make their gift. If you have not made your gift, please help us move closer to reaching our goal of $550,000 by making your one-time gift or pledge in the coming weeks. Krótka historia powstania naszej wspaniałej Parafii, którą być może nie wszyscy pamietają……… Nasza Parafia Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny, powstała 15 czerwca 1929 roku za przyczyną Ekscelencji Księdza Biskupa Thomas E. Molloy. 14 Października 1929 roku rozpoczęto pierwsze wykopy pod “Suteryny” Kaplicy. Grunt był darowany przez Pana Johna Campagnoli, agenta kupna nieruchomości z siedzibą na Manhattanie i Copiague. Artykuł, który ukazał się w gazecie przedstawiał Copiague jako „włoską wieś położoną blisko oceanu, oferujacą ludziom pracę, dostęp do edukacji i posiadająca połaczenia kolejowe.” W 1917 roku na zaproszenie pana Campagnoli, Copiague odwiedził pan Marconi Guglielmo a później Marconiville. Ksiądz Del Vecchio nadzorował i opiekował się budynkami jakie znamy dzisiaj. 30 czerwca 1942, Ks. Vecchio napisał do Księdza Prałata Jamesa H. Griffitha – na Brooklynie, Nowym Jork o miejscowości Copiague. 5 lipca 1942 Ksiądz Prałat zgodził się wygłosić kazanie na uroczystym poświęceniu - otwarciu tej parafii. Poświęcenie Kościoła jest bardzo ważnym czasem w Kościele Katolickim obchodzonym na całym świecie. Zapraszamy bardzo serdecznie wszystkich parafian na uroczystą Mszę Św. 5 lipca do Kościoła, na godz. 7:00 wieczorem, a po Mszy Św. będzie poczęstunek w Sali pod Kościolem.
