SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 23, 2014
Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.
~Leviticus 19:2b
GIVE BETTER THAN YOU RECEIVE
Jesus’s words in today’s Gospel continue
to contrast the Jewish law and practice with
the practice of the followers of Jesus.
Today’s Gospel continues with slight
variations the formulation: ”You have
heard . . . .” and ”What I say to you is . . .”
The old laws of retaliation were once created to soften the
severe and vengeful retaliations common among peoples that
surrounded the struggling people of God. The would-be
followers of Jesus again feel surrounded by people bent on
retaliation. So Matthew presents Jesus, who asks his followers
not only not to retaliate at all but ”turn the other cheek.”
He asks that his listeners give the one who asks more that he
or she seeks. Jesus asks us to love and pray for those of our
home country and the alien, the ones who love us and the ones
who hate us.
Next week’s second collection will be
for Diocesan Obligations.
CHAIR OF ST. PETER - DAY OF INDULGENCE
On Saturday, February 22nd, we will celebrate the festivity
of the Chair of St. Peter. This festivity signifies the primacy,
authority and power of Peter and his successors.
When the Pope raised St. Joseph Church to the dignity of a
Basilica, he provided us the privilege to obtain a plenary indulgence by visiting the Basilica, receiving Holy Communion
(confession if necessary) and reciting a prayer in the intention
of the Holy Father. It may be offered only once for a living
person or a soul in Purgatory. A partial indulgence may be
received as many times as you fulfill the above obligations.
The Church will be open until 5:00pm to provide the opportunity for people to visit the Basilica and obtain the indulgences.
NOVENA TO THE DIVINE MERCY
Please mark your calendar - to join us on Sunday, March
2nd at 3:00pm to sing the chaplet to the Divine Mercy. We ask
you to make a special effort to make time to participate in
meditation and Benediction.
The most important and fundamental ingredient of this devotion is complete confidence, or trust, in Jesus. Please take advantage of this opportunity to receive special graces from the
Lord.
Page 3
NOVENA AND DEVOTIONS TO ST. JOSEPH
St. Joseph is the Patron of the average person with human
traits, such as laborers, carpenters, etc. and also the patron of
families, fathers, single men, those seeking happy death, and
successful business transactions, etc. In many churches and
shrines dedicated to St. Joseph people habitually seek his intercession and express gratitude for received graces.
On Wed., Feb. 26th at 7:00pm, we will again come together
to pray for our intentions. Please print your petitions legibly and
place in the box provided. Members of Holy Rosary Sodality
are asked to participate in devotion and assist in carrying the
Statue of St. Joseph from the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa to the sanctuary.
St. Joseph protect our home. Pour forth heaven’s blessings on
our family. Remain in our midst. Help us to live in love and
harmony, in peace and joy. May the wholesome fear of God
strengthen us that virtue may adorn what we do and our way
may lead to heaven.
CATHOLIC FREE PRESS
Let us follow Pope Francis’ lead and become a “culture of
encounter.” He warns us that we need to be equipped for it.
The Catholic Free Press can help us to be ready to encounter
the culture. February is Catholic Free Press Month and in our
diocese we are privileged to have a weekly Catholic newspaper,
a solid source of local, national and international information.
Help us to keep the Catholic media strong and available by
supporting this publication which is sent to more than 10,000
homes every week and another 10,000 access their electronic
offerings on a monthly basis.
Please consider subscribing or renewing your subscription
and at the same time help us to reach our designated goal. The
price is only $30 per year.
MEETINGS
PARISH COUNCIL-meeting will be on Mon., Feb. 24 at
6:45pm at the rectory. Many issues are on the table and we ask

Event”.
The HSA is seeking gifts for class theme baskets, e.g., Polish

ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB

Event and Indoor Yard Sale on Sat., Mar. 29th. We are looking
for vendors/sellers. Space will be $15. For more information
call Pam Trites at 860-617-5227.
VALUE OF MASS
We are taught by the Church that a Mass offered for a departed loved one hastens final purification for our relatives orfriends. At our Basilica we offer Masses during weekdays and
weekends.
It has been a Catholic tradition faithfully practiced in PolishAmerican parishes that we offer Masses for the deceased as
well as for the living on special occasions. Offering Mass for
birthdays, anniversaries or any other personal intentions are the
most effective form of prayer. Please call the rectory to schedule your special date.
CASH CALENDAR
For your information– this is the last week to purchase your
Cash Calendars for the month of March. Prizes from $50 to
$500 will be drawn for during March. This is a wonderful way
to remember a special person as a gift for a birthday, anniversary or special occasion and assist our parish in supporting this
fundraiser. Pat Parslow and Dottie Kasierski will be at the front
entrance of the Basilica this weekend.
People from all walks of life habitually buy lottery scratch
tickets to win cash prizes. Our Cash Calendar offers better
odds than the state lotteries.
RETREAT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Fr. Jonathan Slavinskas, Parochial Vicar of Blessed John
Paul II Parish, Southbridge, MA invites high school aged students of our parish to attend a retreat to be held on Saturday,
March 1st. The retreat focuses on specific talks which were
given by both experienced speakers along with the youth themselves in sharing personal testimonials. The retreats have continually grown the past several years and this year we are taking
it to the next level.
Registration form and more information are available at the
entrances of our Basilica.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
A new movie based on the Biblical life and times of Jesus
Christ will be released on February 28th in more than 1,500
theaters nationwide, including ones in our diocese. This is a
rare opportunity to reflect on Christ’s love for us and to share
that wonderful, timeless message with young people who attend
Catholic schools and those in the CCD programs.
Cardinal Wuerl of the diocese of Washington, DC says, “I
would recommend to individuals and particularly to families, to
see this wonderful story of the Son of God in order to be inspired all over again with the story of God’s love for us. It is a
joy to watch this film bring alive the pages of the Gospel to
help us see what those who lived at the time of Jesus experience.” Go to SonofGodTickets.com for details.

FAITH: A FIRM FOUNDATION
Faith is often described as a journey. Pope Francis reminds
us that faith is our foundation, grounding us in a chaotic world.
Through faith, we learn both the memory of the past (the story
of salvation) and the future God promises to us. This light of
faith shines brightly on our present experience: the hopes and
fears, the joys and suffering of daily life. Faith awakens us to a
relationship with God, the source and end of all things, and to a
deeper meaning in our lives.
As the Lenten Season approaches, think back upon your faith
journey, who has shared the light of Christ with you? How
might you share the light of faith with others?
41st ST. JOSEPH PARISH FESTIVAL
Even though winter is still upon us, we are beginning to plan
the 41st Annual Festival at our parish. The Special Gifts Booth
is now requesting donations for this year. We will gratefully
accept cash prizes or gifts.
You may bring your gift to the rectory or place cash gifts in
an envelope labeled “Special Gifts Donation” and drop it in the
church collection basket. You may also call the rectory
regarding your donation. Please include your name and phone
number with your gift. The deadline for listing on the raffle
ticket is April 14, 2014.
SNOW REMOVAL ASSISTANCE
This winter with the enormous accumulation of snow,
presented serious difficulty to our parish and school. Snow has
to be removed in a timely fashion to accommodate parishioners
and school children. We are most grateful for the extraordinary helping hands of the following parishioners: Marek
Rudnicki, Grzegorz Kuznecki, Dariusz Ochocki, Eugeniusz
Rudnicki, Wojciech Bialuk and Father Gregory, who not only
in the daytime but at night, plowed the parking lots so
parishioners could park for morning masses.
May their work for the Church of Jesus Christ be rewarded
by God!
Gym Update- It very encouraging every morning to see the
construction being realized at an exhilarated pace despite this
difficult winter. The north foundation is in the final stages of
completion. A new transformer has been installed by National
Grid. The electrical pole which served the school for ages has
been removed to clear the way for construction. Favulli
Electric will connect the secondary wiring. The school has
been re-wired to provide enough power for 21st century
equipment. The steel for the pre-engineering building has
arrived.
We are hoping for an official opening date which is still set
for August.

SIÓDMA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA
23 lutego 2014
„Bądźcie świętymi, bo Ja jestem święty, Pan, Bóg wasz!” (Kpł 19, 2b)
Wykładnikiem doskonałości człowieka
jest stosunek do jego wrogów. Przebaczenie
objawione
w geście
dobroci
wobec
nieprzyjaciół jest dowodem pokrewieństwa
z Bogiem.
Najtrudniejszym
krokiem
w naśladowaniu Jezusa jest przejęcie Jego
postawy wobec Annasza, Kajfasza, Piłata, Heroda, Judasza. To
oni wydali na Niego wyrok. Oni wyrządzili Mu krzywdę. On
zaś nieustannie otaczał ich autentyczną miłością. Jedynym
skutecznym lekarstwem na nienawiść jest mądre przebaczenie,
okazane przez brata i przez Boga. Ono ukazuje bezsens
nienawiści. Ono wzywa do jej zaniechania. Ono kompromituje
nienawidzącego i czyni mocarzem przebaczającego. Boga
możemy naśladować jedynie w Jego miłosierdziu okazywanym
grzesznikom, w przebaczeniu naszym winowajcom.
NOWENNA I NABOŻEŃSTW DO ŚW.
i cieśle.
udanych transakcji biznesowych itp. W wielu kościołach i
intencjach. Intencje modlitewne prosimy wypisywać
drukowanymi literami i umieścić specjalnej skrzynce
znajdującej się w kaplicy Matki Bożej. Członkowie Holu
Rosary Sodality proszeni są o udział w procesji z figurą św.
Józefa z kaplicy Matki Bożej.
Józefie chroń nasze domy. Ześlij błogosławieństwa niebios na
nasze rodziny. Pozostań pośród nas. Pomóż nam żyć w miłości i
harmonii, w pokoju i radości.
drogą do nieba.

POMOC PRZY USUWANIU ŚNIEGU

odpowiednim czasie, aby parking i chodniki mogły służyć
parafianom, pracownikom i dzieciom. Jest to możliwe dzięki
pracy wielu ludzi.
