STEWARDSHIP NOTE: “He rose picked up his mat at once and went away in the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this.’” (Mark 2:12). Have you taken any time lately to think about how truly good God has been to you? He may not have to cure your paralysis if He has already given you the gift of mobility. But do we glorify and thank Him for such simple gifts as sight, and speech, and general health? Do we give back to God in proportion to all the many blessings He has given to us? Compassion and Generosity. Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of everyone, and let your hand give in proportion to your purse. SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES For the Week of February 22 through February 28, 2009 Blessed Mother Altar Candle I - In memory of Nancy Tycz Given by Stacy Kapitulik SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 22, 2009 It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more. – Isaiah 43:25 Forgiven. The people of Israel, even in New Testament times, thought of God in a very personal, intimate, and relationship-oriented manner. In our modern times, we have inherited categories about God from Greek philosophy: God as all-knowing, all-powerful, allpresent. Not that God isn’t these things, but if we think of God primarily that way, when we get to the end of Isaiah today (‘Your sins I remember no more”), we are a bit confounded. How can an all-knowing God forget anything? God–who had the power to forgive their sins–forgave sins, and then completely forgot them! Jesus, in today’s Gospel, is also more interested in the paralyzed man knowing that wonderful, loving, healing presence of God than he is in satisfying the scribes’ pre-conceived notions about God. How often it is we, not God, who remain paralyzed by our past sinfulness, even when we have been forgiven by God and reconciled with others. Let us, instead, give God glory by picking ourselves up from our paralyzed past, and journey on as disciples of Jesus. This weekend the second collection is for all remaining general envelopes in the monthly budget packet. I want to emphasize next weekend’s second collection which is for the Diocesan Obligations. We have to pay not only current obligations which are over $6000 monthly but also reduce the outstanding balance. I greatly appreciate your generosity and understanding. THE FORTY DAYS OF LENT This Wednesday, February 25th, the Universal Church begins the solemn season of Lent with the imposition of ashes. It is a time of beginning anew, of fasting, prayer, almsgiving, conversion, and mutual forgiveness. Bishop McManus, in his letter to all the Catholics of the Diocese, writes: “Christians throughout the world will celebrate Ash Wednesday in a few days. With our parish celebrations, a new Lent begins. This holy season should be a time for all of us to turn away from sin and to live as truly committed disciples of Jesus Christ. “....During the Forty days of Lent, I encourage all to attend Mass and receive the Sacrament of Penance more frequently, to read the Scriptures, to pray the Stations of the Cross, and to commit oneself to performing the Corporal Works of Mercy. Particular attention should also be given to our traditional practices of fasting and abstinence......With the help of God’s grace, let us try to follow Jesus more closely during this penitential season of Lent by praying Page 3 February 22, 2009 - 22 luty 2009 more fervently, doing penance more sincerely, and caring for others more generously. Having done so, we will experience abundantly the joy and peace that only the Risen Lord can give.” LENTEN REGULATIONS Lenten fast and abstinence regulations for the Diocese of Worcester are as follows: Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen (14) years of age and older on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed by all Catholics who are eighteen (18) years of age but not yet fiftynine (59) years of age, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are bound to fast may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed Lenten penitential practices. LENTEN SCHEDULE Ash Wednesday. Imposition of ashes will take place following the Masses at 6:30 a.m., 7:00 a.m. and 7 p.m. Prayer services with the imposition of ashes will be at 1:15 p.m. for the students of Saint Joseph School (parishioners and parents are welcome), and at 3:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday Alms Giving. The Lenten season is marked with three important Penance practices: fasting, prayer, and alms giving. These practices express one’s conversion and concern for the needs of others. This year the traditional Lenten alms giving will be designated for the poor, homeless and St. Vincent De Paul society. As you come to the altar to receive the ashes, please consider making your sacrificial alms giving by placing your donation in the baskets located on the steps in the sanctuary. Devotional Schedule. _Sundays. The singing of Gorzkie Zale (Lenten Lamentations) will take place every Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. _Fridays. Every Friday of Lent (except on the First Friday of the month) the stations of the Cross will be prayed at 1 p.m. in English with the students of St. Joseph School (parishioners and parents welcome), and at 7 p.m. in Polish. On the First Friday of the month, a Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. instead of the Stations of the Cross. Confessions. Confessions will be heard every weekday morning in Lent following the 6:30 a.m. Mass in addition to Saturdays at 3 p.m. Children Lenten Masses. The 9:30 am Mass every Sunday in Lent is designated as Children’s Lenten Masses. All families with children are invited to come and celebrate the Eucharist. The children may sit up front with Mrs. Jolda and other teachers who are at the Mass. Special Mass books will be given to the children to help them participate better and learn about the Mass. Mrs. Barabara Mazeika will conduct “Liturgy of the Word for Children” during the readings at Mass. Children in Grades 1 and lower (incl. 3,4,and 5 year-olds) will be called forward to the front of the altar to be dismissed to go to the priests’ sacristy. They will return to their seats when we are ready to say the Creed. Lenten Flower Sacrifices. Each week the children will be reminded in their classes to make loving sacrifices/good deeds for others during the week - offering them up to Jesus. They are to bring their sacrifices and deeds written on a piece of paper to Mass. They will place their papers in the “Lenten Flower Sacrifice Basket” and receive a flower which they will put up on the base of our Lenten Cross during the Offertory. Their loving sacrifices and good deeds will turn into ‘Flowers for Jesus.” What a beautiful gift to present to Jesus for Easter! Piotr Apostoł a dzisiaj pełni Ojciec Święty. WIELKI POST Najbliższa środa - 25 lutego – to Środa Popielcowa. Rozpoczyna ona 40 dniowy okres Wielkiego Postu. Ks. Biskup zachęca do modlitwy, do uczestnictwa w codziennej Mszy św., do korzystania z sakramentu pokuty, do czytania Pisma świętego, do uczestnictwa w drodze krzyżowej, do podjęcia różnych aktów pokutnych jak np. post i jałmużna. Wincentego a Paulo, pomagającego biednym. W środę popielcową obowiązuje post ścisły i abstynencja od pokarmów mięsnych. PRZEPISY DOTYCZĄCE POSTU I ABSTYNENCJI Abstynencja od pokarmów mięsnych obowiązuje w Środę Popielcową, Wielki Piątek i pozostałe piątki Wielkiego Postu wszystkich, którzy ukończyli 14 lat. Post ścisły oznacza trzy posiłki w ciągu dnia, w tym jeden do syta. Obowiązuje tych, którzy ukończyli 18 lat, a nie rozpoczęli jeszcze 60 roku życia. Post ścisły obowiązuje tylko dwa dni w roku: w Środę Popielcową i Wielki Piątek. Napoje w ciągu dnia nie łamią postu. NABOŻEŃSTWA WIELKOPOSTNE Gorzkie Żale – niedziele 3 p.m. Droga Krzyżowa – piątki o godz. 1 p.m. (English) i o 7 p.m. w j. polskim. W najbliższy piątek zapraszamy na nabożeństwo Drogi Krzyżowej rodziców z dziećmi. Sakrament Pokuty – codziennie po rannej Mszy. Ponadto w soboty o godz.
