Message from Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
I would like to share with you the following message in part which
I received from the Bishop: “....I wish to thank you for the spirit in
which you entered into this unique program (Sharing Our
Blessings). I am very pleased with the overall results of the
campaign as well as the laudable generosity of your parishioners.
Please be assured of my appreciation for your efforts in this
endeavor. I know that you will put these additional revenues to
good use and I am confident that your parishioners are grateful for
all that you did to make the initiative a great success.”
THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
They opened their treasures and
offered Him gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh.
– Matthew 2:11b
Treasures from our Tradition. This Sunday we celebrate the
Epiphany of the Lord, traditionally known as the solemnity of the
Three Kings. The first reading today is charged with the glory of
the Lord. Everyone who can come to the holy city does
come–whole caravans of people of all ages on foot and on
dromedaries and camels.
This description of an irresistible light-filled city prepares us for
the story of the magi. They are guided by their own lights–their
study of astronomy and astrology–and by the light of a peculiar
star. Their study tells them that an unusual event in the heavens is
a sign of an extraordinary birth on earth. They mean to find out
about this, and they set out with gifts worthy of a king. They are
welcomed into an insignificant house in Bethlehem, offer gifts
befitting a king, and receive the gift of faith.
Paul reinforces the great gift of faith available to the Gentiles,
whom the magi represent. What they have seen has changed them,
just as it changed Paul and all who heeded his proclamation. Like
the magi and like Paul, we are invited to receive this life that is
filled with the light of faith.
The blessed chalk will be available at the manger for inscribing
on the doors of your homes the names of the three Wise Men and
the numerals of the new year (K+M+ B+2011) as protection
against adversities through the official prayers of the Church. Your
offerings will be given to the Felician Sisters Infirmary in Enfield.
The second collection this weekend is taken for the
Diocesan Obligations
Next week end the second collection will be taken for
Utility and Energy Costs
FIRST FRIDAY
The First Friday adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament will take place after the 7 a.m. Mass on
January 7, 2011 and continue throughout the day
concluding at 3 p.m. with the Chaplet to the Divine
Mercy and benediction. Adorers are asked to
attend at their scheduled time. A Mass will also be
celebrated at 7 p.m. in the Polish language.
The very meaning of the word “Eucharist” means thanksgiving.
In the Christmas season, it is a great opportunity to come and
express our gratitude to God for the revelation of his love to the
world in the person of Jesus Christ. In the mystery of the
Incarnation, God bestows on each person many gifts of joy, peace,
and happiness. Please come and spend some time before the
Blessed Sacrament in thanksgiving for his blessings, and as
reparation for neglect, carelessness and insults which our Savior
must endure in many parts of our country and in the world. The
contemplation before Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist is an
opportunity to strengthen our faith, and obtain needed graces,

especially when we experience personal difficulties, sickness,
family problems or other trials of life.
Please Note: All members and parishioners are cordially invited to
join us at the 7 a.m. Mass which is designated for either the living
or deceased members of the Sacred Heart Society.
CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
The annual collection for the Catholic University of America will
be taken in all parishes in the United States. The collection in our
Basilica will take place on the weekend of January 16, 2010. Our
Bishop, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, encourages us to be
generous in this special collection.
VISION FOR THE NEW YEAR
We welcome the Year 2011 with anticipation and certain
urgency. It is the year of immediate preparation for the 125th
anniversary celebration of our St. Joseph Basilica parish in 2012.
There are several pastoral issues and property challenges which
must be addressed. We need to re-evaluate our pastoral
effectiveness, involvement of people in various ministries, and
reach out to those lacking participation in divine worship. Also our
attention will focus on the grounds including the front stairs to the
church and surrounding landscaping. The most important project is
our gym and parish center. We hope that sufficient donations will
be received to continue so that we may begin construction as soon
as possible.
SCHOOL GYM AND PARISH CENTER CAMPAIGN
We are in the second phase of the financial campaign which
involves soliciting alumni and businesses. A professionally
developed brochure depicting several important educational
sections of the school was mailed out around Thanksgiving to
many alumni of St. Joseph School. We received several donations
from the alumni living in different states. It appears that most
popular for the alumni are the classrooms for a donation of
$25,000. If any member of your family who graduated from St.
Joseph School did not receive a brochure please contact the rectory
immediately.
For over 100 years St. Joseph School prepared generations of
individuals who guided by their faith, Catholic values, the spirit of
sharing and giving were successful in their careers and live happy
and fulfilling lives. It is my belief that the majority of the alumni
live by the ethos of St. Joseph School and will be willing to help
their Alma Mater.
PARISH STATISTICS
The parish chronicles reflect the following interesting data for
2010: New families registered to the parish - 21; Baptisms 17;
Deaths 41; First Holy Communion recipients - 20 ; Confirmations
- 12; Marriages 3. In addition there were many sick calls made by
the clergy to parishioners as well as to non-parishioners who were
in need of the sacraments.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MUSEUM
The museum in New Haven CT is featuring a new creche exhibit
Christmas in Asia which will run until February 13, 2011. The
director, Lawrence Sowinski, invites parishioners to make this
short journey to view an extra-ordinary display of honoring the
Infant Jesus in various countries.
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DRE

5th at 7 p.m. in the school. If sponsors are available, they are most
welcome to attend.

First Penance - Third session with Students/Parents will be on
January 9, 2011 after the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Make-up session on
Wednesday, January 12th at 6:30 p.m.
First Penance Celebration will be on January 19th at 6:30 p.m. in
the Church. We ask all parishioners to pray for our young people.
AN AFTERNOON OF CHRISTMAS CAROLS
On Sunday, January 16, 2011, at 2 p.m. the traditional Christmas
Carols Concert will be held at Saint Joseph Basilica with several
visiting choirs from surrounding towns. It is a unique opportunity
to relax and enjoy the most beautiful melodies and sentimental
lyrics which we probably know from our childhood. Christmas
cvarols reflect the ingenuity of numerous artists who were able to
create inspiring melodies and deep messages in simple
compositions. The artistry of our Basilica complemented by the
Christmas flowers, and the Fontanini nativity scenery create a
natural background for this concert. I encourage every parishioner
to invite friends and come together for this memorable afternoon.
JANUARY BIRTHDAYS
The month of January, cold and snowy, is upon us, but it also
brings tidings of joy to the following who are enjoying their 90's
birthdays: Charles J. Baron, Wanda Baron, Stella Bishop, Joan
Gilley, Stasia Gontowski, Joseph Knych, Cecelia Tabor, Adela
Truedson, Rose Walkowiak, and Stanley Zackiewicz. May you be
surrounded by the love of family and friends on your special day.
Did you know that the garnet is the birthstone for January and
that the snowdrop is the flower of the month, which often blooms
in the snow? And lest we forget, here is the famous Robert Burns’
memorable poem/song Auld Lang Syne:
"Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne."
INTERESTING FACT FROM THE PAST
Swaddling clothes. The method of covering infants in “swaddling
clothes” is typical of society in the Orient. Basically, to swaddle a
child is to wrap the baby in a square of cloth and strips of cloth
similar to bandages - almost like a mummy. The infant is laid
diagonally on the cloth, the corners of which are then folded over
the feet and the body, but leaving the head free. The cloth strips
(bandages) secure the cloth. An infant would be in swaddling
clothes until about age one. In the bible, the prophet Ezekliel notes
that a child not in swaddling clothes would be considered
“abandoned.”

Nowy 2011 rok jest rokiem bezpoÑrednich przygotowan do 125
