OUR WEEKLY OFFERINGS - July 25, 2010
Weekly $4331 (incl. $751 in loose money); Diocesan Obligations
$152; Fuel $67.
Stewardship Note: Jesus urges us to be rich in what matters to
God. The psalmist warns us against hardening our hearts. Are our
hearts open to what really matters?
Word of Life. Every child...brings us God’s smile and invites us
to recognize that life is His gift, a gift to be welcomed with love
and preserved with care always and at every moment – Pope
Benedict XVI. Young children have an extraordinary capacity for
love and laughter: one researcher found that the average American
child laughs 400 times a day; the average adult, only 15.
EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 1, 2010
Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain wisdom of heart. – Psalm 90:12
Values to Live by. Today’s scriptures contain some catch
phrases that are still quite familiar in our world: “All is vanity,”
and “Eat, drink, and be merry” area both scriptural in origin. In
the same way that it is easy to pray last week’s “Lord’s Prayer”
thoughtlessly, it is easy to let the potent passages of scripture
that are built on these common sayings glide right off our slick
ears.
Last week’s scriptures instructed us to listen attentively to the
Lord, so that we might pray carefully. Our listening and our
prayer are intimately connected. In the same way, this week we
learn that our values and our living are connected as well. It has
become quite common to ask, “Do you own your possessions
or do they own you?” Like the familiar maxims from today’s
readings, we might be tempted to quote this saying flippantly,
and think that in the quoting of it we have truly considered it,
perhaps lived it. Not true, Qoheleth, Paul, and Jesus tell us
today. It is not wrong to treasure or cherish things of earth or of
our own humanity; it is only wrong when those things we
cherish are not of God, are not of the self-giving Christ.
The second collection this weekend is for the
Diocesan Obligations.
Next weekend the second collection is for the Utility and Energy Costs
DEVOTIONS TO THE DIVINE MERCY
This Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. the
chaplet to the Divine Mercy will be
prayed followed by benediction. In 1935,
Our Lord taught Blessed Faustina a
special prayer for mercy: “Encourage
souls to say the Chaplet...Whoever will
recite it will receive great
mercy...Through the Chaplet you will
obtain everything, if what you ask for is
compatible with My will (Diary, 1731).
The message of mercy can be called to
mind simply by remembering A-B-C:
Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to
approach Him in prayer constantly. Be
Merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow
through us to others. Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to
know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust.
FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION
First Friday adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place
after the 7:00 a.m. Mass on August 6, 2010 and continue
throughout the day, concluding with the Chaplet to the Divine
Mercy and benediction at 3:00 p.m. Adorers are asked to attend at
their scheduled time.
A Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. in the Polish language.
Note: All members and parishioners are cordially asked to join us
at the 7:00 a.m. First Friday Mass which is designated for either the
living or deceased members of the Sacred Heart Society.

COLLECTION TO AID THE CHURCH IN
CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
Message from Bishop Robert J. McManus:
“...The 2010 Collection to Aid the Church in Central and Eastern
Europe, inspired by our charity, will truly strengthen the
courageous endurance of people who wish to keep their Catholic
faith alive. ...The world of Central and Eastern Europe needs our
help! Church buildings, destroyed or used for secular purposes,
must be rebuilt. Catechetical centers to educate the faithful and
prepare the young for the sacraments must be re-established.
Clergy, religious, and the laity must be grained in the teaching of
the Second Vatican Council.”
A special collection will be taken at all week-end Masses in all
the parishes. However, since our second collection next week is
designated for a special purpose, this collection will be taken in
our parish the weekend of August 14/15.
SCHOOL NEWS
Innovative Program for Pre-K Students. To clarify the
information printed in the bulletin on July 18, we are repeating
the enrollment requirements for Pre-K classes. St. Joseph School
is offering a five day/week expanded educational program for
the academic year 2010/2011 for children who turn 4 by
September. For the parents who wish to send their children to
Pre-K for 3 days only (M/W/F) and are 4 years old by
September, a similar program with a different teacher will be
held in an additional classroom. The separation of these two
groups of the same age will allow each teacher to measure their
progress, study their development and challenge their
achievements.
A third program for those who will be 3 by September will also
be offered 2 days a week (Tues/Thurs). The main focus of this
age group is socialization and character development.
All programs include religious studies, interactive technology,
progress reports and portfolio creation. For those interested there
are still a few openings available and we encourage you to call
508-943-0378 at your earliest convenience.
School Celebrities. Our Felician Sisters are becoming famous!
Last Thursday Sr. Jeanne and Sr. Valenta appeared on the “Live
with Regis and Kelly” television show. For those who did view
it Regis commented “Now look at those two ladies there. They
are twin sisters, one joined the convent fifty years ago,... and the
other one a year later.” Equipped with a microphone, the sisters
chatted with Regis until Sr. Jeanne informed him that she’d like
to read something that her sister composed. “Regis the man on
the show that everyone enjoys, young and old, middle aged too,
even two nuns honored to be here with you.” she recites. After
she finished the poem, Regis told her “Thank you very much, but
did you say the word old?” Both sisters got a worried look, “Old
people, young people, everybody loves you!” one clarified! It
appears that our Sisters in religious habits are such a rarity that
even television is interested in them. Nice work, Sisters!

UPDATE ON GYM PROJECT
Over the past few weeks, we have been dismantling the house
on 44 Lincoln Street to salvage whatever was of some value.
This week the house was demolished and the property will be
leveled in preparation for the next step in our plans to expand St.
Joseph School.
INVESTMENTS - WILLS - DONATIONS
We have been informed by several people that with the new

year the IRS will implement new regulations on your savings
and investments. For instance, the capital gains tax will
increase by 33%; corporate dividends tax will go up by as
much as 200%; plus increases for individuals in the middle
income tax bracket. This may be a good time to review your
portfolio and consult with your tax and financial advisors on
any plans you may have regarding charitable donations etc.
before the end of the year.
SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY (1786-1859)
On Monday, August 4th, we observe the feast day of St. John
Vianney, patron of priests and parish clergy. It is said that a
busy pastor jokingly suggested the secret of John Vianney’s
holiness: “He died seventeen years before telephones!” Call
they didn’t, but visit they did, keeping Vianney eighteen hours
a day in the confessional. Stories abound of reading hearts and
exorcisms, but Vianney’s first miracle was getting ordained.
Difficulty with studies delayed him, prompting the rector’s
apology to the bishop, “So far to ordain just one, especially
this one!”The bishop, who could not know he was ordaining
the future patron saint of parish priests, replied, “No burden to
ordain one good priest!” In Ars, only an elderly handful
attended the Mass, “praying,”one told Vianney, “for a priest
with brains.” But he stayed forty-two years, fulfilling the
promise he made the day he arrived. In sculpture just outside
the village Vianney points skyward: “Show me the way to
Ars,” he tells a boy, “and I’ll show you the way to heaven.” To
someone who feared there was no heaven beyond the grave,
Vianney smiled, “My child, it would have been heaven enough
to have lived as Jesus’ disciple on earth.”
REMINDER: The Dominican Sisters will be selling their
specialty pies and breads this weekend and ask for your
support.
