In today’s second reading, St. Paul exhorts the Romans to total stewardship. Brothers and sisters, he urges, “. . . offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God”. Word of life. In today’s society the presence of exemplary Christian families is more necessary and urgent than ever. Unfortunately, we are forced to acknowledge the spread of a secularization which leads to the exclusion of God from life and the increasing disintegration of the family. . .Freedom without commitment to the truth is made into an absolute, and individual well-being through the consumption of material goods and transient experiences is cultivated as an ideal, obscuring the quality of interpersonal relations and deeper human values; love is reduced to sentimental emotion and to the gratification of instinctive impulses, without a commitment to build lasting bonds of reciprocal belonging and without openness to life. We are called to oppose such a mentality! TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 28, 2011 “Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” –Romans 12:2 The Cross of Jesus. The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. DIOCESAN OBLIGATIONS Two weeks ago we requested that the parishioners consider a generous donation towards our monthly Diocesan Obligations. That weekend we collected $1,565. Two days ago we received a final bill from the Diocese for the current fiscal year which will end on August 31, 2011. The bill is for $14,913.41! There will be copies of this bill available for your review by the church entrances or you may request a copy from the rectory. Throughout this fiscal year our Diocesan Obligation bill was about $5,500 per month but for some reason did not include the charges for the Property Insurance (rectory & church buildings). We were hoping that this was not an omission, but rather that maybe the Diocese overcharged us in the past therefore, we were not billed presently. Unfortunately, the Diocese included in the August bill the whole year’s worth of the Property Insurance in the amount of $9,772 which brought the total bill up to $14,913.41. I have no other choice but to turn to the goodness of your hearts and once again ask for your generosity towards the Diocesan Obligations. We will conduct one more collection during the weekend of September 3/4, 2011 and mail the final payment for the current fiscal year. May God reward your kindness with good health and many blessings! FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION First Friday adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place after the 7:00AM Mass on September 2, 2011 and continue throughout the day concluding at 3:00PM with the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy followed by benediction. Dzisiejsza nasza relacja i uwielbieni dla krzyóa niewiele ma wspólnego z tym jak go dawniej postrzegano. Nasze odniesienie do krzyóa jest waónym czynnikiem w tym, jak podóamy za Jezusem.
