WEEKLY OFFERINGS - July 11, 2010
Weekly $4630.84 (incl. $405.84 in loose money); Diocesan
Obligations $197.65; Fuel $1783 (incl. $119. in loose money).
˜Considering the economic times, we have made every effort to
reduce expenses for the church, school and the rectory and
maximize savings. We reduced the use of the air-conditioning to
the minimum, except for week-ends so people would be
comfortable for divine worship; we are studying a different
company to provide electricity with a promise of 20-30% savings;
significantly reduced telephone expenses through using various
programs that provide discounts on long-distance calls; and
reducing liturgical supplies to a minimum, combined internet
service for the school and rectory into one account at a discount.
Stewardship Note: Today’s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who
cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality required, was rewarded
with his heart’s desire–a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of
hospitality, but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging
giver?
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 18, 2010
It is (Christ) whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and
teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present
everyone perfect in Christ. – Colossians 1:28b
Details, Details, Details.....Poor Martha. She complains to
Jesus that her sister has left her with all the
housework. Parents, caregivers, and
restaurant workers, you know you can be run
off your feet. Extra people makes more work.
In Jesus’ time it was unthinkable for a woman
to sit as a disciple, so Martha is
understandably irritated. “Martha,” says Jesus
gently, “you are anxious and worried about
many things” (Luke 10:41). Mary’s choice, to sit at Jesus’ feet,
shows that she sees how important it is to listen while Jesus is
still with them. Martha knows who Jesus is (John 11:27), but
forgets amid hostess duties. This is like what we do even now.
We complain at Mass: the choir is too loud, the homily too
long, altar servers are not reverent, people talk too much before
Mass. When such details disrupt our attention we become
Marthas. We are here to be Marys, focused on the Lord. Let’s
give him our complete attention and our profoundest thanks.
The second collection next weekend is for all envelopes remaining in
your monthly budget packet.
NOVENA TO ST. ANNE
A three-day novena to St. Anne will begin on Friday July 23,
following the 6:30 a.m. Mass. Conclusion will be with a Mass at 7
p.m. on Monday, July 26th.
SCHOOL NEWS
Faculty. I was informed by the new Provincial of the Felician
Sisters in Pennsylvania that St. Joseph School will receive an
additional Sister for the academic year 2010/2011. Her name is
Sister Valenta, twin of Sr. Jeanne, who already served in previous
years at our school. She will be primarily involved in the
Kindergarten as an aide and will teach the second grade in
preparation for First Communion. With the combining of many
policies into one, there is a strong possibility that we will receive
more Sisters. To have a religious order teaching in a Catholic
school is a rare occurrence in our country today. St. Joseph School
is fortunate to have three Felician Sisters teaching our students. The
Sisters have a special gift of inspiring the students to study,
strengthening the Catholic identity of the school and have a
positive influence on the development of the school. The Felician
Sisters follow the patrimony of their founder, retain their monastery
habit, and adhere to deep spirituality by prayer and devotional
practices. We wish Sr. Valenta and all the Sisters at St. Joseph
School a successful and blessed academic year.
˜ Mr. Carmine Cacciapuoti, a teacher of Science at St. Joseph
School for the past 35 years, asked to be relieved of this duty. We
want to thank him for his total and unconditional loyalty to St.
Joseph School, educational expertise, and spirit of cooperation. He
will still remain on the faculty and be involved in the After School
Program, Library, Science Fair etc.
˜The new Science teacher for grades 6-7-8 will be Mr. Richard
Skrocki. He acquired original prominence as a teacher at Shepherd
Hill High School in science, an expert on educational technology
Page 3
July 18, 2010 - 18 lipciec 2010 r.
and a faculty consultant for the public schools. Mr. Skrocki,
who began his educational career at St. Joseph School some
years ago, brings vast educational experience and enthusiasm
into the science programs. In addition, Mr. Skrocki will
assist the teachers with the advanced technology such as the
Promethean.
˜I am also pleased to report that all current faculty members
will return again for the academic year 2010/2011.
Innovative Program for Pre-K Students. In response to the
significant increase in the enrollment in the Pre-K classes, St.
Joseph School is offering a five day/week expanded
educational program for academic year 2010/2011for
children who turn 4 by September. The children will learn
the alphabet, numbers, sizes, shapes, colors, reading,
religion, math, science and social studies. In addition they
will have library twice a week, gym once a week. In
addition, through various games and plays the social and
psychological development of a child would be strengthened
and evaluated. For the parents who wish to send their
children to the Pre-K for two days only, and are 4 years old
by September, a similar program with a different teacher
will be held in a separate classroom. The separation of these
two groups of the same age will allow the teacher to measure
their progress, study their development and challenge their
achievements. With this division more students will be
accepted at St. Joseph School.
Another program is for the 3-year old and for those who
because of age will repeat the program for another year. The
main focus of this age group is socialization and character
development which are the base for structure and educational
setting which includes reading, math, science and social
studies.
All programs include religious studies, interactive
technology, progress reports and portfolio creation. For those
interested there are a few openings available . Please call
508-943-0378.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Our organist, Mr. Robert Wojcik, will be out on a onemonth vacation and therefore there will be no organ music
for week day Masses. Every Mass is realization of man’s
salvation and personal encounter with Jesus Christ and
therefore Saint Joseph Basilica fully adheres to the liturgical
requirement by providing music for weekday Masses. Ms.
Connie Galli and Mr. Marcin Plewa will provide the
liturgical music for the Sunday Masses. We wish Mr. Wojcik
a joyful and restful vacation and safe return to Saint Joseph
Basilica.

DONATIONS
˜We are extremely grateful for the donation of $500 given in
memory of Emily and Stanley Kabala by the family. The
donation was made specifically for the “front steps project.”
The jubilee project of addressing the front landscaping
including the stairs at the front entrance to the church has not
been publicly announced as yet, but the sketch of the proposed
design motivated our dedicated parishioners to already make a
donation. We are most grateful for the first donation to this
important jubilee project. Emily and Stanley were loyal,
generous and life-long members of our parish. It is
commendable that the children follow the footsteps of their
parents in extending their mission of service to the church on
their behalf. May God reward the souls of Emily and Stanley
with eternal peace and happiness in heaven.
St. Joseph Basilica. In memory of Stanley Kabala by Gene
and Barbara Columbus; Doris Gemme by D. Jane Gogolinski.
St. Joseph School. Special thanks to the parishioners of St.
Andrew Bobola for their monthly contribution to the school in
the amount of $479. Although school is not in session during
the summer months, we still have payroll and other expenses to
meet.
Helping Your Neighbor. If you truly want to help the soul of
your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your
heart. Ask God simply to fill you with charity...with it you can
accomplish what you desire. – St. Vincent Ferrer
