Stewardship Note for Corpus Christi. The Scriptures today
remind us that “we, many though we are, are one body for we all
partake of the one loaf.” How are we using our gifts of time and
talent to build up the Body of Christ? See 1Corintians 10:16-17.
Word of Life. Sarah...(eleven and a half years old) betrayed no trace of
nervousness as she told a roomful of genetic counselors and obstetricians about
herself one recent afternoon. She likes to read, she said. Math used to be hard, but
it is getting easier. She plays clarinet in her school band. She is a junior girl scout
and an aunt, and she likes to organize, so her room is very clean. Last year she won
three medals in the Special Olympics. “I am so lucky I get to do so many things,”
she concluded, “I just want you to know, even though I have Downs Syndrome, it
is O.K.”
THE MOST HOLY BODY AND
BLOOD OF CHRIST
June 26, 2011
Not by bread alone does one live,
but by every word that comes forth
from the mouth of the Lord. –
Deuteronomy 8:3b
Feast of Faith. The Corpus Christi
Procession. In the thirteenth century, a Belgian nun by the
name of Juliana had a vision: she saw the full moon silvery
and radiant except for one dark spot. The meaning of the
vision was revealed to her: the moon was the Church’s
liturgical year, the dark spot a missing feast in honor of the
Blessed Sacrament. Today’s feast of Corpus Christi–the
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ–grew from Juliana’s
vision.
On this feast, many parishes observe the traditional
Corpus Christi procession, giving honor to the Eucharist by
carrying this greatest treasure out of the safety of our
churches and into our streets...We take Jesus with us, not
only in our hearts, but carried in our midst and exposed in
a monstrance. It is a public profession of faith and blessing
of the world. Jesus walks with us on these streets that we
walk day after day, among those who know him but yearn
to know him better, and among those who do not know him,
The Eucharist is a mystery to be believed, to be
celebrated–and to be lived.
The liturgy at St. Joseph Basilica will begin at the 11
a.m. Mass with Bishop Daniel P. Reilly as main
celebrant. Following the Mass the procession will
proceed down Whitcomb St. to Cutler St., then to
Granite St. and conclude at the Emmaus Center.
The second collection this weekend is the final for
Partners in Charity. We presently have reached 95% of
our goal for this appeal. We need $1,250 to reach our goal
of $25,000. Please consider making a donation this week
so that we can attain 100%.
SOLEMNITY OF SS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES
On Wednesday, June 29, we will observe the Solemnity of the
martyrdom of SS Peter and Paul. The celebration is of ancient
origin and is one of the higher ranging holy days during the
ecclesiastical year, but is not a holy day of obligation. On this day
newly appointed archbishops receive the primary symbol of their
office, called pallium, from the pope.
Day of Indulgence. On this day, St. Joseph Basilica has the
privilege to grant indulgences to the faithful. A plenary indulgence
may be obtained under the usual conditions, which means reception
of Communion, confession if needed, a visit to Saint Joseph
Basilica, and prayer in the intention of the Holy Father. A plenary
indulgence may be obtained only once and a partial indulgence as
many times as the Basilica is visited and a prayer is said in the
intention of the Holy Father.
REFLECTIONS ON THE FESTIVAL
At the beginning of the summer St. Joseph Basilica had the
opportunity to host the 38th Polish Festival. Each day brought
different people and had different programs. Visitors from many
cities and neighboring states enjoyed the music, food and the
atmosphere of welcome and friendship. This year we enjoyed an
adequate number of people who extended a helpful hand which
