OUR SACRIFICIAL OFFERINGS - August 29, 2010
Weekly $4761.35 (incl. $261.35 in loose money), Diocesan
Obligations $238, Fuel $70, Propagation of the Faith $705.15.
Stewardship Note: Jesus tells the crowd that only those who
renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly
asking us to give up everything? Perhaps instead He is trying to
help us see that everything we think we own is really a gift from
God. Good stewards know that and strive to use those gifts
accountably.
Word of Life. Another school year begins. How many desks are empty
due to the deaths of children when they were unborn babies? Who can
comprehend the talents and gifts lost due to more than 52 million
abortions since 1973. Every human being, at every stage and condition, is
willed and loved by God. For this reason, every human life is sacred. To
deprive someone of life is a grave wrong and a grave dishonor to God.
Because we are created in the image of God, who is Love, our identity and
our vocation is to love. Pope Benedict has called this “the key to our
entire existence.”– USCCB Respect Life Program Flyer (2010)
TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 5, 2010
Fill us at daybreak with your
kindness, that we may shout for
joy and gladness all our days.
– Psalm 90:14
Embracing Your Cross. We
often speak of the “crosses” we must carry in life. These
can range from loss of a job to a serious or terminal illness
to unhealthy relationships, and so on. The cross has become
the wide-ranging metaphor for the trials, ills, and
discomforts that are part and parcel of every human life.
While we all understand this use of the word “cross” it does
a disservice to what the Jesus of the Gospels means by it.
For him, a “cross” is not something that fate, bad luck, or
unfortunate circumstances foists upon one. It is, instead,
something one chooses, something one embraces. When life
hands us a “cross” we pray to the Lord to give us strength
to bear it. If we are to be true disciples, we must also pray
for the strength to reach out and willingly accept a cross as
well.
The second collection this weekend will be taken for the
Diocesan Obligations
Next weekend the second collection will be taken for the Utility and Energy Costs
DEVOTIONS TO THE DIVINE MERCY
This Sunday at 3 p.m. the monthly devotion to the Divine Mercy
will take place. The most important and most fundamental
ingredient of this devotion is complete confidence, or trust, in
Jesus. The Lord insists on this in very clear terms, as Sister
Faustina noted in her Diary: “No soul will be justified unless it
turns with confidence to My mercy. Let the greatest sinners place
their trust in My mercy. ....Graces are drawn from My mercy with
one vessel
only, and that is - trust.......If your trust will be great, then My
generosity will know no limits.” Please take advantage of this
opportunity to receive special graces from the Lord.
LABOR DAY
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, a national holiday, is
a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and
economic achievements of American workers. It is a yearly
national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the
strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The vital force
of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the
greatest production the world has known and has brought us closer
to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political
democracy. Since it is a national holiday, the rectory office will be
closed.
THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN
The feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, observed
Wednesday, September 8th, has been celebrated in the Church at
least since the 8th Century. The birth of Mary was miraculous. She
was conceived without sin as a special grace because God had
selected her to become the mother of His Son. According to one
tradition, the house in which Mary was born in Nazareth is the
same one in which the Annunciation took place.

The Blessed Mother did not have her own biographers as Jesus did
(Four Evangelists). Whenever there is reference about Mary in the
gospels it is always in connection with Jesus Christ.
If you have a nice statue of Mary, or a “Mary Shrine” in your
home, it would be appropriate to decorate it with flowers and
candles today, in celebration of Mary’s birthday.
Mary’s Birthday Cake. All children love birthday cakes – so
today, you could make a birthday cake for the Blessed Virgin
Mary. A white layer cake or angel food cake would be appropriate,
with white icing and blue icing for trim (white is a symbol of
purity; blue symbolizes fidelity, and is a color especially used for
Mary). You may let the children help with the decorations. If you
have a small statue of Mary it could be placed in the center of the
cake which can be surrounded by 10 candles, one for each “Hail
Mary” prayer in a decade of the Rosary.
PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council will meet on Wednesday, September 15 at 7
p.m. in the Parish Conference Room beginning the new parish
calendar season. Many items will be on the agenda and we ask all
members to be present. Please notify chairman Peter Kusek or
secretary Sylvia Kitka if unable to attend.
SCHOOL NEWS
Twenty-three little children crossed the threshold of St. Joseph
School Wednesday morning to enter their Kindergarten class. They
looked very distinguished and professional dressed in their
uniforms. The Kindergarten children, many of whom had pre-K
experiences, will develop social skills and a positive self-image
which are essential for academic success. The Kindergarten
children need experienced teachers who know their needs, plan
realistically and use appropriate activities according to the their
developmental level. Experienced teachers know that in many cases
efforts are more important than results.
The second important part is the environment in which the
children spend so much time. Usually classrooms filled with
manipulative items, equipment for building, replaying materials
and tools for creative pursuits, work the best.
Miss Ashley Cormier with experience in teaching Kindergarten
and Sr. Valenta, a veteran teacher in primary education, will
effectively guide their educational, psychological and spiritual
development. At the present time there are no vacancies and new
applications will be placed on the waiting list.
ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB
This is the third year that the St. Joseph Polish Women’s Club is
participating in the Shop for a Cause to be held at Macy’s on

giving back during Macy’s national day of support for local nonprofit organizations. Coupons for $5 may be purchased at the
September meeting or by calling President Jane Wilk 508-9432236 or Felicia Kolodziejczak 508-943-6591 for more information.
– Joyce Dziedzic, Publicity Chairperson

Raffle in conjunction with the A SPLASH OF PANACHE you may
do so till September 9. Thank you for your support.
– Jo-Ann Canty, Special Raffle Chairman

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DRE
Religious Education. Classes start September 13 at 5:30 p.m. Both
parents and students will meet in the Church for the first session.
Letters were mailed out this week. We are looking forward to
handing on our faith to your children. Please keep all our Catechists
in your prayers.
Parishioners your help is needed! Handing on our faith is the
work of all baptized Catholics. Training will be provided. Is God
calling you to help? Perhaps as a catechist, aide in classroom,
hospitality, or office helper or to be a prayer partner? Are you able
to give one hour a month or only 1 or 2 a year? We need help in
Grades 1, 7, 8, 10, Confirmation and RCIA.
RCIA Classes. Life has many storms–distressful relationships,
jobs, poor health; situations where we feel our powerlessness. If
you know someone unbaptized or baptized in a non-Catholic
Christian tradition, who is searching for strength and understanding
to weather such squalls, invite them to seek the perspective the
Catholic Church offers. Classes for everyone including persons in
need of Baptism, First Communion and/or Confirmation will be
starting September 14 at 7 p.m. in the school. Call Mary Jolda for
more information.
Confirmation. There will be a Parent/Student meeting on
September 8 at 7 p.m. in the school. All information concerning
Confirmation will be given at this time.

invaded Poland starting World War II in Europe on September 1, 1939;

England in the Mayflower on September 16, 1620; the Constitution of
the United States was signed on September 17, 1787; a great hurricane
