Stewardship Note: Am I waiting for the “right” time to become a good steward? Do I plan to share my time and talents “later?” Today’s Gospel warns those who are procrastinating about stewardship to be prepared – “at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” Word of Life. The true measure of humanity is essentially determined in relationship to suffering and to the sufferer...A society unable to accept its suffering members and incapable of helping to share their suffering and to bear it inwardly through ‘com-passion’ is a cruel and inhuman society. – Pope Benedict XVI, In Hope We Are Saved, no. 38 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 8, 2010 Our soul waits for the Lord, who is our help and our shield. – Psalm 33:20 Given Much. “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much” (Luke 12:48). At least the Lord hasn’t entrusted me with much! Thank goodness that the work of the reign of God on earth has been entrusted to somebody else. This must be the “good news” of today’s Gospel, right? Wrong! In the mentality that has come to be known as “keeping up with the Joneses” we can gear ourselves toward a comparison with those who have more or who have been given more, even by God. Unfortunately, nowhere does Jesus say: “Not much will be expected of those who have been given only a little bit.” Each of us, in our own way, has been given something, some gift or treasure that we can put toward the work of the reign of God. ....The concern of each of us in the vocation for which we have been chosen is to take what we have been given, and consecrate it for the continued in-breaking of God’s kingdom of justice, joy, peace, and beauty. Then will we come to realize that we have indeed been given much. He was born the second son of Juul Kolbe and Maria Dubrowska and was given the baptismal name of Raymond. About the time of his First Holy Communion, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him; he was about 12 years old. During the time the Blessed Virgin was appearing to him, she offered him the graces of virginity or martyrdom and asked him which he wanted. Filled with zeal, he begged for both, and was filled thereafter with the most ardent desire to love and serve the Blessed Virgin Mary. He entered the Franciscan seminary, choosing the name Maximilian; on April 28, 1918 he was ordained a priest. He studied and practiced his missionary work in Rome, Poland, Japan and India, spreading the devotion to the Blessed Mother and establishing the Militia of the Immaculata. Poor health forced him to curtail his missionary work and return to Poland in 1936. After the invasion of Poland by the Germans in 1939, the Gestapo arrested Father Kolbe and shipped him to the dreaded Auschwitz prison. He was Page 3 August 8, 2010 - 8 sierpien 2010 r. assigned the hardest and dirtiest tasks in the camp. HARVEST CELEBRATION - DOòYNKI From memorial time throughout the Old Testament, people felt the need to express their gratitude to God for their bountiful harvest. The celebrations were expressed by various customs which became a tradition in many countries, for example our Thanksgiving Day. This tradition was associated with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother. On this day, or the nearest Sunday, the Harvest Wreath designed in a variety of shapes was carried to the Church as a visible sign of their faith and gratitude to God. Next Sunday at the 11:00AM Mass, the Harvest Wreath made of the products of the land such as wheat, flowers, fruit, etc., prepared by our young people, will be carried into Church for a special blessing ceremony. In our technological society, where in the mind of the children, the local store is the provider of food, the Harvest Celebration is the opportunity to teach the youngster about the role of God’s Providence in providing nourishment for our bodies. This ceremony is a qualification of the tradition, which means that it has become a powerful tool in our community of transmitting the value of gratitude to God for all his bountiful blessings.
