Stewardship Note: Today’s theme is perseverance – Moses keeping his hands praised throughout the battle, Paul urging Timothy to stay with the task of preaching and teaching, and the widow appealing to the corrupt judge. To be faithful stewards of God’s gifts, we, too, must persevere in the roles to which we are called. TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 17, 2010 I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Persistence. As the end of the liturgical calendar draws near the liturgy focuses more and more on the end of time. This week we are reminded that God’s ultimate victory may be a long way off. Perseverance in prayer, proclamation, and work will be needed along the way. The characters in today’s readings can serve as role models for us on the long journey of discipleship. The letter to Timothy urges us to “be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient” until the coming of “Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead” (2 Timothy 4:2, 1). The second collection this weekend is the Annual collection for the Propagation of the Faith Next weekend the second collection is for all remaining envelopes in your budget packet A WORD FROM THE RECTOR At a funeral the Church commits the body to the earth in hope that it will rise again in glory. In the tradition of the Church the Mass of Resurrection and the burial take place within a week of death. Ideally, the burial should be the same day as the liturgical celebration. Separating the two by so-called private burial at the convenience of the family is against the practice of the Church. This separation is becoming more prevalent when we are dealing with the ashes. We apply the same dignity to the burial of the body as well as to the cremains. Once again, it is contrary to the practice of the Church and respect for the human body to keep the cremains in the house for weeks or months, or share the ashes among the family members, or to search the cremains for small pieces of bone to encapsulate it in a piece of jewelry for sentimental reasons. Likewise, it is totally wrong to carry the cremains to the Church for Sunday Mass in a shopping bag or to attend a family member funeral or any other family gatherings. It is the belief from time immemorial that the human spirit cannot find peace until its body is put to rest. About 400 students, parents and grandparents attended the picnic.
