FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 1, 2009
Come, let us bow down in
worship;
LJ. \
let us kneel before the Lord
who made us.
- Psalm 95:6
True Prophets. In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's
very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false
prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal
words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus
teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the
authority of God's own voice, the Holy One of God. Some
false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed
in scripture, and even held positions of church authority, but
in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because
he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he
was popular or famous. Our work is to do our best to
discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true
prophets a well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not
hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to
God. it will be God's very words fillinu our mouths.
The second collection this weekend is for the

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
On Monday, February 2nd, we will observe the feast of the
Presentation of the Lord, sometimes referred to as Candlemas Day.
This day commemorates the presentation of Christ in the temple
and the ritual purification of the Virgin Mary. Blessing of candles
will take place at the 6:30 am Mass. Candles will be available near
the sanctuary stairs for a nominal offering or you may bring your
own candles to be blessed which should be lit in your homes as
protection from harm. A Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 pm in
Polish.
FEAST OF SAINT BLAISE
The festivity of St. Blaise, bishop and
martyr, who is associated with the healing of
throats, will be observed on Tuesday, February
3rd Blessing of the throats at Saint Joseph
Basilica will take place at the conclusion of the
6:30 am Mass, at 1:30 pm and at 6:30 p.m.
DONATIONS
I am overwhelmed by the quick response from parishioners to my
appeal last week for snowblowers. As a result we received a brand
new, heavy duty snowblower from John and Louise Hester at a
cost of $1400. lam personally very grateful to John and Louise for
this extra-ordinary act of generosity despite their many family
financial obligations. This was one of several acts of generosity
they have extended to the parish which indicates their faith-and a
sense of belonging to St. Joseph Basilica. Thank you and God
Bless you.
We are also grateful for the donations of used snowblowers from
Terry and Ralph Paglione, Marion and JoL auise Winters and
Janet Stoica. The above donors exemplify the spirit of giving and

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK NEWS
Sunday Reflections. Bishop Robert McManus celebrated the 9:30
a.m. Mass at our Basilica and officially opened the Catholic
Schools Week celebration. The liturgy was complemented by the
School Children's Choir and several musicians under the direction
of Robert Wojcik. The recipient of the Partners in Education
Award, Mr. Craig Holmberg, was introduced by Mr. Donald
Cushing, School Principal. This distinguished award for 2009 was
presented to Mr. Holmberg by Bishop McManus.
After the celebration the bishop went to the school where he was
greeted by the HSA chairperson, Tina Gorski-Strong, and the
president of the Student Council, Nicole Tetreault. The bishop
enjoyed several musical selections presented by the school children
under the direction of Sr. Jeanne and posed for pictures with the
faculty and various school boards. He also made a tour of the
school and with special interest observed the computer lab,
interactive white boards, and Language Arts Computer Program.
New parents with school-age children toured the school and
enjoyed the Animal Adventures Show of exotic animals arranged
by Ewa Mãmro.
* *Monday of Catholic Schools Week focused on "Service in
Vocations." The day began with a school-wide prayer service. The
students heard from a variety of speakers who visited their
classrooms and spoke about how they serve God's people. The
presenters included Mrs. Mary Jolda and Mrs. Madge Gromelski,
Father James Mazzone, Deacon Anthony Surozenski, Sister Marcia
MaiyFelician Sister, and Sister Gabrielle-Little Sister of the Poor.
The students learned much about listening to God's call in their
lives and the privilege and joy Of serving Him. We thank all the
speakers for their wonderful witness. - Sister Mary Ann
* *On Tuesday, January 27", the students of St. Joseph School
celebrated community service by making Birthday-in-a-Bags to
deliver to Webster-Dudley Food Share. The bags contained
everything needed for a birthday party. The students were short a
few items, so Mrs. Lefebvre made an emergency trip to the Dollar
Tree Store to pick up the needed items.
Page 4
While unloading at the checkout, I spoke with a woman who recently
lost her job. The woman asked me about the overflowing cart of
birthday goods. I explained that this was our community service project
for Catholic Schools Week. We wanted to make birthdays a little
brighter for children in need. After hearing about our project, she gave
me a donation towards the supplies because she felt this was a most
generous and worthy cause, and she had to be a part of it. I thanked her
profusely for her donation and the smile on her face was priceless. I did
not get her name, but we thank her and ask God to bless her and her
family for this act of generosity. - Karen Lefebvre.
