Stewardship Note. Get up and eat, else the journey will he too long Jbr you!' (1 Kings 19:7). Jesus knew that the stewardship journey would be difficult, so He gave us the nourishment of the Eucharist. When we take time to join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength to give and bring joy in our giving. NINETEENTH SUNDA YIN ORDINARY TIME August 9, 2009 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. -.John 6:51 Strengthened by the Bread of Life. Today we resume the "Bread of Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews' ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. The second collection this weekend will be taken for Phase III. To date, we have realized a total of $26,179 of which $17,379 is cash and $8800 in pledges. Correction. Please note that the second collection on the weekend ofAugust 15116 is designated for Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION On Thursday, August 13 ', the outdoor candlelight procession in honor of our Lady of Fatima will take place. Please join us as we pray the rosary for the special intentions of the participants. The special service will conclude with benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The flowers in front of the Blessed Mother's altar for Our Lady of Fatima were given in memory of Henry Sabaj by his daughter Betty. SAINT MAXIMILIAN MARY KOLBE PRIEST, MARTYR On Friday, August 14', the Universal Church commemorates the feast of Saint Maximilian Kolbe who made the ultimate sacrifice offering his life for another prisoner in Auschwitz. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on October 17, 1971, and on October 10, 1982 Pope John Paul II canonized Father Kolbe as a martyr. J - Urni 'I H H 3] bc Bk---d ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY August 15 is the day that Catholics have long • celebrated what is called the Dormition (falling asleep) or Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Having completed her earthly pilgrimage, she was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. It was the final and crowning grace of Mary's friendship Page 3 August 9, 2009 - 9 sierpnia 2009 r. with God. She left for us the most beautiful hymn of the praise of God Magnificat saying that God raises the lowly, casts down the mighty, fills the hungry, and sends the rich away empty. Along with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception the Assumption is a principal feast of the Blessed Virgin and a Holy Day of Obligation - one of the most important feasts of the Church year. You may find the schedule of Masses printed elsewhere in the bulletin. The solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother is connected with the blessing of herbs, flowers, and the harvest wreath. Faithful to the old tradition, we encourage people to bring a bouquet of their bountiful flowers and herbs for blessing during all Masses. ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN'S CLUB The next Fashion Show Committee meeting will be held on Monday, August 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. All interested members are welcome to attend. - Judi Dery, Publicity Chairperson DONATIONS Friends of St. Joseph School Fund. In memory of Walter Majkut by Josephine Trojanowski. WORD OF LIFE At every Mass, we should offer special prayers for our nation and her leaders, in order that the culture of death may be overcome and a civilization of love may be steadfastly advanced. All Catholics throughout the nation should take part in Eucharistic adoration and in the praying of the Rosary for the restoration of the respect for human life and for the safeguarding of the integrity of the family. In our prayers, we should seek, above all, the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, under her title of the Immaculate ........................ SOCIETY FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH Each year Most Rev. George Rueger, Auxiliary Bishop of Worcester, designates a Missionary who will visit our church to present the sacrificial works of the order and the need for financial assistance. This year we will welcome Father Michael Shanahan of the Sacred Hearts Missions to speak at all Masses on the weekend of August 22/23, 2009. One of the great missionaries of this Congregation is Blessed Damien, the "leper priest of Molokai", who was beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II. Fr. Damien's heroic devotion to the victims of Hansen's Disease has inspired many men and women to dedicate themselves to the cause of the outcast and marginalized. In July 2008 the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved the authenticity of the final miracle attributed to Blessed Damien, which fulfilled the requirements for his canonization. Pope Benedict XVI will canonize Fr. Damien to sainthood on October 11, 2009. DRE Page 4 MINISTRY TO THE SICK To attend to the needs of others is one of the prerequisites of the Gospel. To share time and talent with others without thought of personal gain or remuneration is a great challenge that Christians face today. Christ spent his entire public life healing and tending to others, especially those in need, with great compassion and love. Many times persons who at one time were visibly active and productive in society and the Church community have become isolated, neglected and forgotten because of sickness or old age. One of the goals of the ministry is to make these people aware of their great contribution to our Church, especially when they carry the cross of suffering and disabilities. During vacation time, when life seems to be at a slower pace, we ask you to consider seriously and prayerfully how you might share some of your time and talent with the sick and elderly parishioners. For those who are interested in participating in the active ministry please call John Gogolinski 508-943-5963 or the rectory.
