TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY
TIME

" humbly welcome the word that
has been planted in you and is able
to save your souls. —James 1:21b
Welcome the Word
The Highest Law. From time to
time, newspapers and magazines publish various laws that
are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and
age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor
bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity
when the law was written is now readily available, so the
law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and
preserving precious resources is still around, evident in
many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is
with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today
is others' attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that
becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their
own sake. What Jesus teaches today is thatobservation ofj
external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems
of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our
whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to
love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman
Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and
even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ,
we must always look into our own hearts and underneath :
our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love
of neighbor are what we prize above all.
The second collection this weekend is taken for all
remaining envelopes in your budget packet for August.
Next weekend, the first Sunday of the month, the second collection will be taken
for Diocesan Obligations
SCHOOL DAYS ARE HERE!
This Wednesday, September 2, we

teachers and classmates. Kindergarten
students will cross the threshold of their
class on Thursday, September 3 rd , and the
little ones registered in Pre-K will start on Thursday, September
10th Principal Donald Cushing and the faculty are prepared with
boxes of Kleenex for the newcomers (and their parents!).
On Wednesday, September 2, the students and parents will be

pastors of Catholic schools are invited to the Cathedral for a
10 a.m. liturgical celebration. Following the Mass there will
be educational sessions at the DCU Center. As we begin a
new academic year for all Catholic schools across this
country, let us pray for the teachers and the students. The
parents expect from Catholic schools the highest intellectual
achievements and character development. Quality education
of future leaders in our town and country is the responsibility
of every individual, not only parents.
FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION
First Friday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take
place after the 7 a.m. Mass on Friday, September 4, 2009 and
continue throughout the day concluding with the Chaplet to
the Divine Mercy. Benediction will take place at 3 p.m. Every
parishioner as well as friends are truly welcome to
participate in this Eucharistic Adoration. Please note: This
month the traditional 1:15 p.m. Mass will be replaced by
the 8:30 a.m. Mass.
ANNUAL PARTNERS IN CHARITY APPEAL
Our diocesan campaign for charity and education is short of
$150,000. Bishop McManus expressed gratitude to all those
who financially supported vital human services in our
diocese by their contribution. He also is asking for a second

many collections in our parish, especially our maintenance
contributions, I will make a modest donation to the diocese
from our general parish resources. If, however, someone
would like to make a special donation, please bring it to the
rectory this week.
