By being good stewards, we, too, can help brine others closer to God. THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 25, 2009 The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the - vfark1:15 The second collection this weekend will be taken for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal and remaining envelopes in your Jan. budget packet The second collection next weekend will be taken for Diocesan Obligations CONVERSION OF ST. PAUL This Sunday we celebrate the conversion of St. Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles. He was born in Tarsus, a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin and by privilege was a Roman citizen. A staunch persecutor of Christianity, converted by Jesus Christ on the way to Damascus, he became a tireless apostle and missionary. He is the titular patron of our cathedral in Worcester. Last year Pope Benedict XVI declared the Year of Saint Paul to be from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK We have the great privilege to welcome His Excellency Bishop Robert J. McManus, celebrant and homilist for the 9:30 a.m. liturgy on the opening of Catholic Schools Week celebration. The bishop also will attend the gathering of parents and students in the school cafeteria for family pictures after the Mass. It is an excellent occasion for the faculty, student organizations, Home and School Association and St. Joseph School Educational Board to join the bishop on this special day. Partners in Education Award. Congratulations to Craig Holmberg who has been chosen to be the recipient of the 2009 Partners in Charity Award. Mr. Holmberg for many years shared his time and talent with the school, leading the Athletic Department, GolfToumament, and working on many projects such as the Auction, Bingo, Festival and Knights of Columbus. The School Administration, Faculty, and entire student body are grateful for his service to the school and extend best wishes to him and his family. Benefits of a Catholic School. The meaning of a happy and successful life depends on two important factors—personal identity and values of an individual. In our country, the identity of the young people is formed by movies, television programs, media, latest fashions and cultural trends. These components are transient, changeable and obviously not based on profound truth and purpose of life. True identity emerges from caring families and solid Catholic education which nourishes faith, responsibility, respect, human dignity etc. Values are not automatically given to an individual but they are acquired by learning. Again in this liberal society with a toxic culture, Catholic schools are the only oasis of values which determine a meaningful life and eternal destiny. There is no treasure more important to the parents than the proper formation of mind and character of a child. A child is like an uncut diamond-when influenced by family values and polished by Catholic education he/she could become a gem for the parents and society. Page 3 January 25, 2009 - 25 styczen 2009 EVANGELIZATION Evangelization is a process of proclaiming the Good News to those who are atheists, non-Christian, and those who ceased to practice their faith. The responsibility for evangelization belongs to everyone in the Church in a special way to lay people who in their life come in contact with those who lost their faith. There was a time when only baptized Christians were allowed to say "Our Father". We say together the most powerful prayer Our Father as a full member of the Catholic Church in the family of believers. To bring to our parish family those who are not practicing the faith is our privilege and responsibility so we could say again with them Our Father. FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT VOTING This weekend on the request of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops and strongly supported by our Ordinary, Bishop McManus, we will conduct a postcard campaign in all the dioceses of Worcester to make our congressional representatives aware of our moral position to the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) that may be introduced in Congress within the next weeks or months. Before each Mass an explanation will be given and the cards should be returned in the offertory collection. CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP Sr. Youth Group Movie Nights. Saturday, January 31 t from 6-9 pm to watch "Get Smart." Popcorn and soda will be provided; feel free to bring snacks to share. Passion Play & Summer Musical Info Night. There will be a quick informational meeting on Wednesday, January 28' at 6:30 pm in the Youth Center for youths interested in putting on a Passion Play during Holy Week. Anyone interested in participating is invited to attend. Immediately following the Passion Play discussion there will be a quick meeting about the Summer Musical. We can decide on which one to perform and discuss summer practice schedules. If you are interested in either of these performances but cannot attend the meeting, please let Mrs. Valcour know. Snow Tubing. The Youth Group will go snow tubing at Ward Hill on Friday, February 27'. The cost is $18 per person and is open to youths in grades 6-12 and their families. Payment must be received no later than February 201h Anyone tubing under the age of 18 must complete a liability form and return with payment. Please call Mrs. Valcour for additional details. - Mary Ellen Valcour 508-943-9544 DONATIONS IT IS A HARSH WINTER! Our snowblowers have been working for over ten years to clear the sidewalks and parking lot making them accessible to the parishioners and students to attend Mass and school. Unfortunately they have broken down and are beyond repair. If any parishioner has a snowblower in good condition but not being used, please call the rectory. This is an urgent situation because we are only in the middle of the winter and the area to clear of snow is quite large. SIGN PRO-LIFE POSTCARDS! This weekend, our parish, along with thousands of other parishes across the nation, will sign postcards urging Congress to oppose the "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA) and to retain existing laws against government funding and promotion of abortion. Sign a postcard to your U.S. Representative and your two U.S. Senators. Let your voice be heard! Thank you for standing up for life at this important time! Read more about FOCA in the flyer available at Masses this weekend; and visit www.usccb.org/prolife and www.nchla.org. OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA CHAPEL A PLACE OF WORSHIP Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel provides private space for reflection, meditation and prayer. Votive candles provide the symbolic opportunity to make an offering in a special intention. Recently it has been noticed that someone is lighting candles randomly oblivious of its intention. May I kindly ask the parents to watch their children and not allow them to play at the entrance to the church without supervision. CONCLUSION OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON Next Sunday the children of the Polish Saturday School of Worcester will present a brief Christmas story at St. Joseph Basilica with a mini-concert by the Bazyliszki following the 11 am Mass. Parishioners are welcome to attend this program. St. Joseph School. It is a commendable gesture to provide financial support to the school so it would continue its mission and shape the minds and character ofthe present generation. Wezwanie do nawr6cenia jest aktualne zawsze i dotyczy wszystkich wyznawcow Chrystusa. Kaidego dnia powinnismy podejmowac wysilek nawracania siq, czyli nasladowania Jezusa w naszym zyciu. Wszyscy jestesmy powolani, jak apostolowie, do gloszenia Dobrej Nowiny i swiadczenia o niej swoim zyciem. Dlatego warto dzisiaj zapytac siebie, czy dobrze wypelniamy to Chrystusowe powolanie? TYDZIEt1 SZKOL KATOLICKICH Dzisiaj rozpoczyna sic w USA Tydzieri Szkol Katolickich. Ktos powiedzial ze dziecko mozna porownac do niewypolarowanego diamentu ktore kiedy wzbogacone wartosciami rodziny i wychowane w katolickiej szkole nabiera polysku i staje sic drogocenna perla. Tysi4ce dzieci i mlodziey w Stanach Zjednoczonych Otrzymujq katolickie wyksztalcenie oparte na zasadach ewangelicznych. Do tej grupy nale±q równie uczniowie naszej Szkoly Switego JOzefa.
