Thank you once again for your continued generosity and support. Stewardship Note for the Third Sunday of Advent. Each of us has his or her own role to play in the coming of the kingdom of God. John the Baptist was called to be the herald of the Messiah, preparing the way of the Lord. To what is the Lord calling me? Word of Life. For her part, the Church has always had great respect for the elderly....God wills a proper respect for the dignity and worth, the health and well-being of the elderly and, through her charitable institutions...the Church seeks to fulfill the Lord’s command to respect life, regardless of age or circumstances. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 12, 2010 Those whom the Lord has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy. – Isaiah 35:10a Reason to Rejoice. Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). The second collection this weekend will be taken for Utility and Energy Costs Next weekend the second collection will be taken for the Diocesan Retirement Fund for the Religious. Religious men and women have heeded the call of the Lord by their witness to Gospel values and their commitment to serve those around them. Today, tens of thousands of them are now elderly, frail and in need of assistance. Their communities struggle to provide adequate care. Please be generous in this appeal. NOVENA TO THE INFANT JESUS On Thursday, December 16th, we will begin the traditional nine-day novena to the Infant Jesus. A novena means nine days of interrupted prayers and therefore we will recite abbreviated prayers following the 6:30 daily Mass as well as on the weekend to fulfill this requirement. We encourage parishioners to attend this novena and offer it for a particular intention or at least recite this novena at home if your health or work schedule does not permit you to be in church. ADVENT CONFESSIONS To receive all the spiritual benefits of this sacred day of Christmas, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is essential for everyone, even those who may not have serious sins. On Monday, December 20th, at 6 p.m. there will be a Reconciliation evening for the entire parish including young people from Religious Education. There will be several clergy from different parishes to facilitate reconciliation for your convenience. We ask the parents and grandparents to encourage family members and friends to take advantage of the opportunity to receive forgiveness for sins through God’s goodness and mercy. Page 3 December 12, 2010 - 12 grudzien 2010 r. This coming week the clergy will be visiting homes of homebound parishioners who would like to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please call the rectory as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. Priests will not be available on December 24th, the vigil of Christmas. CHRISTMAS OFFERING Advent and Christmas are associated with charity. In fact, sharing and giving is at the very heart of Christmas. All our good deeds revolve around Jesus who is born into the world and who is a central figure of the Christmas story. All giving and sharing among family members and friends is appropriate but we cannot forget that Jesus is the reason for the season. Therefore, we celebrate Christmas by participating in divine worship, contrary to the secular culture which makes Christmas a folklore observance reduced to shopping, family gatherings and food. The second essential part of Christmas is sharing and giving to Jesus and His Church. The Christmas collections across this nation have increased because people are giving a donation equal to one month of Sunday offerings. If the dog, cat and others get a higher gift than the Church of Jesus Christ we have a crisis of faith. Let’s remember the birthday of Jesus with a special gift! MESSAGE FROM THE HSA The Home and School Association wishes to thank everyone who supported the Christmas Bazaar. Your support allows us to continue providing events for our students. A special thank you to Chef Guiseppe Fasulo and Artie Hunt for the delicious foods from the kitchen. We appreciate all of your efforts. We look forward to your continued support with the upcoming auction in March 2011 and many other events. Breakfast with Santa. Our parishioners are always welcome to attend our sessions on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. to show their support and share their faith. Our last meeting before Christmas is December 14th. Come and join us. Confirmation - December 19th @ 8 a.m. in the school to follow with the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Please be prompt. First Reconciliation - Our next Student/Parent Session is Sunday, December 12th after the 9:30 a.m. Mass in the school gym. Makeup session is on Wednesday, December 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the school. VOTIVE CANDLES AT THE ALTAR The votive candles at the 3 altars in the sanctuary are reserved for family members as a special remembrance of their loved ones or special occasions in their lives. Placing a votive light is a demonstration of your faith and confidence in the mercy of God. As you go about your daily tasks the flame of your Votive Light constantly declares your prayerful petitions and prayers of thanksgiving. To request a Votive Light please contact the rectory. The candle burns from Sunday through Saturday of any given week for a donation of $25. OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA CHAPEL The chapel is a sacred place for prayers and petitions to Our Lady. It is also a location where we light a candle for our special intentions. Although many candles are lit, the donations are minimal. In order to keep the lights in the chapel, we would like to remind you that the offering for each candle is $3. Your offering is not really payment for the candle, but a free offering in your particular intention which at the same time enables us to buy the candles. We welcome them to celebrate the Sunday liturgy with us and take part in the many ministries and social functions of the parish. FAREWELL TO THE STUDENTS FROM POLAND On Thursday, December 9th, the students from Poland will meet the press at 10:30am.followed by a luncheon and farewell program prior to departure to their country after 10 weeks of studies and inculturation. On Saturday, December 11th, there will be a gathering of these students with the host families at St. Joseph Hall in Charlton. At these farewells the Director of the Catholic Pijarskie Schools in Poland, Rev. Dr. Bogdan Dufaj, and the Director of Charitable Foundations which supports the Piarist schools, Ewa Samojlik, will participate. It was a mutually learning experience, equally important for the students of St. Joseph as well as those from Europe. In view of Tuesday’s statement by President Obama quoting the findings of recent studies showing that the U.S. is falling behind in reading, math and science on the international scene and his encouragement to do more to gain the edge in leadership, the international outreach is not an option but a necessity of the times. St. Joseph students are invited to travel to Poland in June for educational, cultural, research and vacation purposes. In the following years, the St. Joseph School students will be going to different countries in Europe. We wish the returning students a safe journey and God’s blessings in their studies.
