Stewardship Note. In today’s Gospel, Jesus prays, “I have given You glory on earth by finishing the work You gave Me to do.” Good stewards follow His example by using their time and talents for the glory of God. See John 17:4. Likewise, our St. Joseph Basilica community has work to finish in pastoral, spiritual and physical areas. Everyone is needed and invited to build the Church of Jesus Christ here and now. MARRIAGE BANNS II Jessica Conroy-LeBoeuf and Jason Legault DIVINE MERCY DEVOTIONS This Sunday is the first Sunday of the month, dedicated to the Divine Mercy. At 3 p.m. services will be held praying the chaplet to the Divine Mercy followed by benediction. Please join us for this very special devotion asking our Lord for special favors in our lives. SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - June 5, 2011 “They have kept your word.” – John 17:6b Devoted to Prayer. Today, as we await Pentecost, we come to the end of the baptismal homily from Peter that we have heard over the past few weeks. This homily was written by a realist who knew the joy and the glory of a resurrection faith, but also knew that the strength of that faith would be put to the test and tried in suffering. Earlier this year we heard Jesus preach, “Blessed are you when they insult you...because of me” (Mathew 5:11) and this is echoed today by Peter. Our awaiting the Spirit, awaiting our mission for Christ means that we are, most likely, awaiting some sort of trial and suffering. We don’t endure the same degree of persecution that Peter and John knew, but each of us has our faith put to the test eventually. And it is for this reason that we, like Jesus and like those faithful followers gathered in the upper room, devote themselves to prayer. The second collection this weekend is for the Diocesan Obligations The second collection next weekend is designated for Utility and Energy Costs DONATIONS St. Joseph School Gym. In memory of Ed Motyka by Barbara Motyka. PARTNERS IN CHARITY The final in-pew collection for Partners in Charity will be on the weekend of June 25/26. So far we raised $21,599.50, but $3400.50 is still needed to meet our goal. We hope that by that date we will meet our quota to assist those who need our help. FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DRE Religious Education Registration for Fall Classes. During the month of June we are holding registration for our Fall Classes. This includes new First Graders starting Public School in the Fall, new parishioners, and present classes. Registration forms are in the back of the Church. All information is on the form. Please return promptly and call Religious Education Office for questions. Thank you to all our catechists who served in the Religious Education program this year. Their dedication and hard work is greatly appreciated. A very big thank you to the following catechists: Susan Fleck, Betty Sabaj, Jackie Skrocki, Patricia Podbielski, Cindi Gardner, Angela Rivers, Danuta Kolodziej, Shiela Kusek, Henrietta Panu, Diane Gajewski, Mary Ann Roman, Norman Delap, Sister Mary Ann Papiez, David Podbielski, Christina Bielunis and Lisa Bilis. Parishioners needed to help in Religious Ed Program for Fall. We need people interested in being Catechists (Grades 4 and 8), on the RCIA team, and Confirmation Team. A willingness to share your faith is essential. We will provide training. Please call Religious Education Office and leave a message. Our parish needs you to help pass on the faith. With your hands and heart, Jesus can be brought into other people’s lives where He can make a difference! Page 3 5 June 2011 - 5 czerwiec 2011 r. 2011 High School Graduates who are alumni of SJS are invited with their parents to attend the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Jun 12th, followed by a brunch in the cafeteria. Please RSVP to the rectory if you will attend and how many. CEMETERY There is some misconception about the Cemetery Perpetual Care as to its purpose and use. I would like to emphasize that the Perpetual Care money cannot be used for maintenance such as cutting the grass, plowing in the winter, but is only for the development of the cemetery e.g. if you want to acquire additional land or land reorganization. We are not responsible to trim the shrubs near the monuments. The shrubs should be trimmed frequently by the family members. If there is no response from the family regarding the shrubs after several calls, the neglected shrubs will be pulled out. Decorative flowers in front of a monument should not exceed one foot. If anybody has an additional concern about a grave which is not properly filled or needs grass planting, please call the rectory. PARISH JUBILEE MEETING There will be a planning meeting on June 7th at 7 p.m. in the Rectory for the Jubilee celebration. The Committee is working with the cooperation of the Parish Council to propose various activities, events, and pastoral programs for this meaningful and significant anniversary. The Parish Council will be represented by Anthony Kusek, Sylvia Kitka, and David Zdrok. All committee members are asked to attend including representatives of parish organizations. If you are unable to attend, please contact Cindi Gardner at [email protected]. Thank you. CANONICAL MEANING OF THE PARISH Etymologically, parish is derived from the Greek paroikia which in the early Church meant pilgrim people whose real country and citizenry is in heaven. For approximately four centuries the parish and the diocese were co-extensive. After Christianity received freedom it was the goal of Emperor Charlemagne to establish a church with its own parish priest in every village and town. The land owners and nobles were usually the ones who built the churches and supported the clergy therefore they had more influence than the bishop. This was changed during the Gregorian reform and the parish structure remained substantially unchanged until Vatican II. After the Vatican II synod the parish is defined not as much an organization or an institution but as a community. Community implies the theological principle of communio (Greek koinonia). Although territoriality remained a vital part nevertheless the emphasis is on the community of Christian faithful who strive for eternal salvation under the leadership of the pastor. Therefore, parishes are both human and divine. Human because they are visible institutions with a sacred edifice, buildings of worship etc. which have to be guided and governed by the local law but at the same time it is a community of Christian faithful who are called to proclaim the Good News and adhere to the teaching of the Church. UPKEEP OF PARISH PROPERTY Every year we have been addressing some problem areas around the rectory. During the last couple of years we replaced the corroded columns, restored the woodwork with a new railing on the front porches and balconies. Last week we addressed the porch between the rectory and the church. We placed new fiberglass columns which will last for at least another 50 years. While working we discovered that the porch roof was leaking and we have Page 4 to replace many boards, apply tar paper, metal flashing, and seal properly against future water damage. As soon as the rest of the parts for the porch arrive we will complete the project. For the Jubilee Year the outside rectory including window shutters and painting need to be addressed.
