The supper includes kielbasa, pierogi, golabek, rye bread, cabbage, beverage and dessert. The proceeds will be used for the support of their elderly and infirm Sisters. Please reserve this date on your personal calendar! FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS February is the only month with a variable number of days; it has the distinction of celebrating President’s Day, and it is designated as Negro History Month. Groundhog Day is observed on February 2nd (let’s hope for a cloudy day!), February 5th is National Chocolate Fondue Day, and of course, February 14th is the well known Valentines Day. It is thought that St. Valentine was a priest during the reign of the Roman Emperor, Claudius II. This emperor felt that soldiers were more dedicated if they remained unmarried. He decreed that soldiers should not marry. The priest married young couples anyway. He was martyred for his “cupidity!” The amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February. Added to all these celebrations, are the special 91st birthdays of the following: Anna Kozlowski, Frances Lacky, and Marion Winters. May you enjoy a great day with your loved ones. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Parish Council was held on January 20, 2010 in the Parish Conference Room. Several topics were discussed at length including the Diocesan Partners in Charity campaign. It was agreed that the campaign should be held in Lent as last year. March 21 was selected as the in-pew collection date. Our quota for this year will be the same as last year, $20,250. The upcoming 125th anniversary of the Parish in the year 2012 generated a detailed discussion. It was stressed that the front entrance to the Basilica including landscaping was a priority. Plans for the official celebration were discussed and it was agreed that the month of October would be a meaningful month since both the blessing of the altar of the Church as well as the elevation of the church to Basilica status took place in October. It was agreed that the Wednesday votive Masses at 6:30 a.m. presently celebrated to St. Joseph should be promoted in our parish and beyond. St. Joseph is a patron of the Universal Church. There are world conventions held in his honor, many shrines are dedicated to his name where people in large number make pilgrimages in a spirit of petition as well as gratitude for needed or received graces. It was discussed that perhaps an evening Mass on Wednesdays at 6:30 to St. Joseph could be added to increase participation. Mega Raffle. The Early Bird Mega Raffle drawing took place at the end of the meeting. The five lucky winners for a free entry into the grand Mega Raffle were: Connie Holmberg, Oxford; Tony Kusek, Dudley; Thomas Balcom, No. Grosvenordale, CT;Len Hast, Webster; M/M Richard Dabrowski, Cooperstown NY. The grand prize drawing will take place in the school cafeteria on February 27, 2010 after the 4 p.m. Mass. Don’t delay – You still have time to purchase that winning ticket! See any member of the Parish Council or come to the rectory. DISCIPLESHIP Each member of the St. Joseph Basilica family is making every effort to share with the Church and the community time, talent and treasure. There are some people who dedicate endless hours on a voluntary basis throughout the year to the Church. The work of these individuals saved the parish a lot of money and it was suggested by some parishioners that perhaps they should receive at least a tax advantage. Therefore a book will be introduced in the sacristy where people could record their volunteer work to the Church. The end of the month of January provides us an opportunity to reflect on our stewardship to God and His Church. As we look on our calendars or check book we could determine what percentage of our monthly effort we dedicate to God. Page 4 BINGO EVERY SUNDAY AT ST. FOR YOUR INFORMATION It is with deep regret that we say good-bye to Rev. Boguslaw Psujek who was with us at St. Joseph Basilica for the past several weeks. He is returning to Poland for health reasons. We express our sincere thank you for his pastoral assistance and wish him many blessings of God . PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Whoever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall poison take effect on them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy, or shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask. KRONIKA PARAFIALNA Donacja. W imieniu parafian Bazylika Sw.
