WORD OF LIFE. Every little boy and girl is a unique and irreplaceable creature designed by the God of love, his personal gift that comes to us bearing his image and likeness. While biological parents assist in God's creative act, God contributes the child's eternal soul—his or her intellect, consciousness, will and the capacities to reason and love, to hope and aspire. - Respect Life Program Flyer 2009-2010 Waiting. Our Lord prefers to wait for the sinner for years rather than keep the sinner waiting one instant. —St. Francis de Sales THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME November 8, 2009 The Lord keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. Psalm 146.71 The Call to Discipleship. The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to - discipleship. Today's Gospel. passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn't mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus' way of service, even if it requires giving one's livelihood (or life). In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They, too, give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the I Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life "to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him." The second collection this week is for the final Phase III payments Next weekend a second collection will not be taken. DEVOTION TO SAINT JOSEPH Saint Joseph has been a powerful intercessor before God for human needs. Probably for this reason he was declared as patron of the Universal Church. People with various needs pray to St. Joseph such as starting a new business, financial difficuties, protection of the family or for someone who is approaching his final hours of life on earth. Recently in our country it has almost become fashionable to pray to St. Joseph to sell the house, to buy a house etc. People are continually looking for novenas, prayers, Masses to St. Joseph. In our Basilica we have a novena of Masses every Wednesday at 6:30 in the morning. I want to believe that many people in our parish experience a variety of needs and seek the protection of St. Joseph in their journey of life. We invite all of them for the 6:30 a.m. votive Mass. SCHOOL NEWS On Friday, October 30, the students of St. Joseph School with their parents truly enjoyed the Halloween celebration with a variety of treats. Parents spent a lot of time to decorate, serve and provide the appropriate background for this annual cultural event. It was the best attended social gathering which filled the cafeteria and the corridors. The children enjoyed many goodies including ice cream. Of course, the highlight was the costumes parade. Also during the school day the children enjoyed moments of common gathering and treats. It seems that from the beginning of September children identify Halloween as an important social gathering in the certain monotony of daily work until the Christmas season. I want to thank the Home and School Association for their leadership and the parents for their assistance. Page 3 November 8, 2009 - 8 listopad 2009 VETERANS DAY On Wednesday, November 11 °' we observe a treasure from our tradition, Armistice Day, which began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the allies and Germany, ending World War I (then called the "Great War") on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States. The date was declared a national holiday and in many parts of the world people take a two-minute moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. as a sign of respect for the roughly 20 million who died in the war. Let us remember all those who died that we might live in freedom. HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION (HSA) GENERAL MEETING The HSA general meeting was held on Tuesday, October 27.The general topic of this gathering of parents was the safety of children presented by various individuals addressing many different aspects of protection. The presentation of Atty. Julie Lashur from District Attorney Joe Early's office was an eye-opener to many people when she declared that the very dangerous place for a child is not only the streets or bad influence of the neighborhood students, but also the home. Students have a tendency to use the internet and cellular phones late at night when they are not supervised and this is the time when they could encounter real danger. She outlined several steps of helping the children avoid falling into the trap of various predators and devious individuals. Atty Lashur also has been the criminal prosecutor for abused children. ALTAR SERVERS On Saturday, the 31St of October, the Altar Servers had an opportunity to participate in the organized program at the Haunted Hay Ride at Century Sportsman's Club in Auburn. Prior to the hay ride the young altar servers participated in trick or treat on Camile Road. The students enjoyed the spooky, scary hay ride and then encountered a special program prepared for them. They were treated with various goodies and apple cider, and enjoyed the hospitality of the club. We thank Ewa Mamro for organizing this event. Thank you to all the families who attended, and all our "saints" who helped make the event possible. We had fun learning about the Saints as models of love and faith. Our parish is very fortunate to have some "saints" growing up in our midst. Parishioners your help is needed! Handing on our faith is the work of all Baptized Catholics. We are asking all parishioners to pray for those who are discerning about joining the Church or becoming fully initiated members; our Confirmation students; and those who will be making their First Penance and Eucharist this year. Your prayers are essential for God's kingdom to grow on earth. Religious Education still needs an 81l grade catechist, aide in classroom, hospitality or office helper. Please call Mary Jolda and leave a message if you can help in any way. NOVEMBER CASH CALENDAR WINNERS Nov. 14100 Theresa A.
