vision of the City of God, the new Jerusalem. “But,” the bishops’
pastoral on Stewardship reminds us, “that ‘life to come’ is in
continuity with this present life through the human goods, the
worthy human purposes, which people foster now.”

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 9, 2010
May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you!
– Psalm 67:6
The Workings of the Spirit. There’s
a good chance that you’re reading this bulletin article because you
went to church for Sunday Mass. With any luck (even if it’s the
Saturday Mass of anticipation), the sun is shining outside. If it’s
early Sunday morning, perhaps you still saw the moon in the sky
as you were on your way to celebrate the Eucharist. Church, sun,
moon. Stable and staple parts of our lives. But today we hear of a
place, the place of our Christian destiny–the new and heavenly
Jerusalem–where there is no temple, no sun, no moon. All of these
will be replaced by the Lamb of God: Jesus Christ crucified, dead,
buried, and risen from the dead!
Day by day, week by week, we will still have, and we need, the
sun and moon, and the Lord’s house on earth to offer our worship.
But even while we enjoy the celestial luminaries and offer our
praise to the Lamb, we keep our gaze focused on that time and
place when all light will be eclipsed by the light of Christ’s eternal
glory, and we will join the angels and saints in the temple that is
God, as we continue to sing our ceaseless praise in the power of
the spirit.

MOTHER’S DAY
Today our country pays special tribute to all mothers. In 1914
President Woodrow Wilson made an official
announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a
national holiday to be observed each year on
the second Sunday of May. The carnation was
selected as the Mother’s Day flower because it
represents sweetness, purity, and enduring
quality of a Mother’s love.
Motherhood is the most cherished and
valued vocation in our society. Their love and values and the ability
to make a sacrifice shape the personality of the children and
influence the world. All the Masses today are offered for mothers,
living and deceased, and for the intentions you submitted on your
remembrance envelopes. Let us pay special tribute to our mothers
with a visit, a gift, a prayer, or a visit to the cemetery.
PARTNERS IN CHARITY
It is with great accomplishment and gratitude that I am
pleased to report that we have collected $21,068 – which means
that we have exceeded our goal by $818! The last minute efforts
by the co-chairmen Betty Sabaj and Carolyn Swierzbin and the
great generosity of several individuals and organizations has
put us over the top!

May I express my humble thanks to all the contributors for
once again placing St. Joseph Basilica among the list of parishes
who have met or exceeded their goal! I especially am grateful
to Betty and Carolyn for the excellent job done! Thank you and
God bless you! – Msgr. Tony
ASCENSION OF THE LORD
On Thursday, May 13th, we observe the
Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, marking
the end of Christ’s mission on earth and
celebrating his glorious return to His father in
heaven. It is a day of obligation and the Mass
schedule is printed in the bulletin. All of us who
look forward for life eternal will joyfully
participate in this solemnity of the Ascension.
CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION
On the 13th of May we begin our traditional candlelight
procession honoring Our Lady of Fatima. This tribute will continue
each 13th of the month through October. Our services will follow
immediately following the 7 p.m. Ascension liturgy. We ask all
the Children of Mary, who have the privilege to carry the statue of
our Lady in the outdoor procession, to participate wearing their
official attire. We also invite parishioners, organizations, school
children and friends to join us as we pray the rosary.
