Does the amount of my offering suggest that I could honestly say the same? Word of Life. The topic of post-abortion syndrome–that is, the grave psychological distress experienced by women who have had recourse to voluntary abortion–reveals the irrepressible voice of the moral conscience and the most serious wound it suffers every time that human action betrays the innate vocation to the good of the human being, to which it bears witness. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 24, 2011 All things work for good for those who love God. –Romans 8:28a A SHARE IN GOD’S KINGDOM. Today concludes a three-week series of Gospel texts in which we have listened to a total of seven parables about the kingdom. The believer is asked to consider the request that God made of Solomon in today’s first reading: “Ask something of me and I will give it to you” (1 King 3:5). Today’s parables about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price should prompt us to answer, “A share in your kingdom, O God!” Today we discover that the kingdom of God is beyond value, a priceless treasure. Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things that it believes are priceless treasures–the bigger and better SUVs, anti-aging and anti-balding creams and salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a share in God’s kingdom and helping to bring about that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can ever hope to gain. This week’s second collection will be for all remaining envelopes in your packet. JULY CASH CALENDAR WINNERS July 18-$50 Joseph Smith III, Webster; July 19-$50 Jennifer E. MISSION COOPERATION APPEAL On the weekend of July 30th and 31st, Fr. Joseph Thalanany V.C., of the Vincentian Missionaries will visit our parish to acquaint us with their mission in several dioceses in India and other parts of the world. STAIRS TO THE BASILICA This week we began the reconstruction of the stairs to the Basilica. We are taking advantage of favorable summer weather, previously acquired material and the expertise of now available craftsman. It is an important and involving project which will be addressed in phases according to available financial resources. So far we have collected $14,000 for the Jubilee Project. We are grateful to those parishioners who understand the importance of this Jubilee and our obligation to maintain the parish property. The stairs in front of the church had many cracks and empty spaces beneath, and again we were advised by the experts to replace them. The new stairs will be a combination of concrete and granite; the top of the steps will have long slabs of granite with a facing of brick reflecting the color of the Basilica. The area adjacent to the stairs commonly used for the gathering, will be much wider and esthetically paved with various stones. During the construction time, please kindly use the entrances on both sides of the church. We apologize for this inconvenience. The Maynard Street stairs will not be addressed at this time. In addition to repair of the front stairs, there are several other issues which the Parish Council identified as important to be addressed before the Jubilee celebration such as replacement of the one heating/cooling unit, development of the publicity brochure for the Basilica, and improvement of the sound system. We hope that through the generosity of the parishioners, especially those of better means, we will be able to accomplish these goals. CLOSING OF ST. HEDWIG PARISH IN SOUTHBRIDGE With the reorganization of the pastoral ministry in Southbridge, the Polish-American parish was closed and the people were advised to join the newly created Parish at the former Notre Dame Church, now called Blessed John Paul II Church. We sympathize with the parishioners of St. Hedwig’s who worshiped in their church for nearly a century and now must join a different church. This is especially difficult for people who are accustomed to worship within the context of Polish-American spirituality, cherish the Polish traditions and promote the Polish-American cultural and religious values. All those, especially the new immigrant community, who were accustomed to the Polish devotional practices, novenas, adorations, processions, etc. are welcome to St. Joseph Basilica in Webster. Whenever a Parish is closed two important questions arise. What is left once the visible institution is suppressed or closed? Who will promote the values which that institution aggressively supported for many years? In this case St. Hedwig’s promoted the Polish spirituality which is deeply rooted in the spirituality of the Universal Church. We wonder if this spirituality, which is a natural partner to counteract the secular culture of our time, be able to flourish and make a vibrant contribution to a different community? It will be difficult, but perhaps not impossible and will depend on the people’s willingness to promote this distinctive spirituality in the new community. The second question always refers to underpinning circumstances which play an important factor in closing of a parish. Did the people care for their parish Church? Was there a spirit of sacrifice? Enough volunteers to serve the parish? Steady and continuous financial support of all the members and participation in Divine Worship? I cannot answer these questions, therefore, I leave this to the historians of St. Hedwig Parish. CEMETERY The majority of people take good care of their monuments placing small decorations and flowers in front of them. However, there are several lots that have overgrown, untrimmed trees which encroach the neighboring lots and do not look presentable. May I kindly ask you to address this issue or within a couple of weeks these trees/shrubs will be pulled out by the cemetery personnel. We want the cemetery and adjacent grounds to be clean, therefore please do not bring household refuse into the barrels or dumpsters designated for cemetery trash. FROM THE SCHOOL Registration. St. Joseph School is currently accepting students into our Pre-K for 3 and 4 year olds programs as well as to all the grades K through 8. ST. ANNE CELEBRATION This Tuesday we observe the solemnity of St. Anne with the 7:00 pm. Mass. We are asking all the members of St. Anne Society to join us for this special celebration. We also kindly ask all the parents with babies who were born since July 2010 to the present, to bring them to the church to be entrusted to God through the intercession of St. Anne. Little is known about the lives of St. Anne and her husband Joachim. However one thing is clear that they could not have any children despite their fervent prayers and generous offerings to the temple. They decided to fast and Joachim went for a special retreat in the desert. Through divine intervention they received the promise that their prayers will be answered. St. Anne made a vow that if God gives her a baby she will dedicate the child to God so it will serve God the rest of his/her life. And God blessed them with a little girl whom they named Mary. The cult of St. Anne goes back to the 6th century when Emperor Justinian built a first shrine dedicated to St. Anne in Constantinople. Today her cult is well known in the universal church. Contemporary digital generation might be a little skeptical when we talk about the saints and yet the saints play important roles in our life. We carry their names, they are patrons in many cases, well known historical figures and spiritual models. Many of them were Page 4 steeped in knowledge or received little education, worldly or reclusive, of a great emotional and a physical courage or removed from day to day cares and stress. They were well know politicians, innovators, monks, nuns, peasants, kings and queens but all of them have one thing in common - they were all devoted to serve God. I encourage each and every one of you to learn more about your patron saint and to revive the prayers to them. KRONIKA PARAFIALNA SIEDEMNASTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKºA „…Bóg wspó»dzia»a z tymi, którzy Go mi»uj we wszystkim dla ich dobra…” Mieƒ udzia» w królestwie. Dzisiaj s»yszymy ostatnie z serii siedmiu przypowieÑci o Królestwie Niebieskim. Kaódy wierzcy powinien rozwaóyƒ pytanie, z którym niegdyÑ Bóg zwróci» si“ do króla Salomona: ProÑ o to, co mam ci daƒ. Dzisiejsze przypowieÑci o skarbie zakopanym w ziemi i drogocennej perle powinny sk»oniƒ nas do odpowiedzi: O udzia» w Twoim Królestwie, o Panie, gdyó jawi si“ nam ono jako bezcenny skarb. Niestety nasza kultura bombarduje nas zupe»nie innymi „bezcennymi skarbami”: lepsze samochody, bardziej komfortowe óycie, diety cud, i wiele innych rzeczy, które przys»aniaj nam to co najwaóniejsze: Ñwiadomoу, óe mieƒ udzia» w Królestwie Niebieskim to najwi“kszy skarb, jaki kiedykolwiek moóemy mieƒ nadzieje posiadaƒ. Dzisiejszej niedzieli w czasie drugiej kolekty zbieramy wszystkie pozostale koperty z naszych rodzinnych pakietów. Bóg zap»aƒ! ST JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB W Ñrod“ 27 lipca o godz. 18:30 w szkolnej kafeterii odb“dzie si“ spotkanie Polish Women’s Club. Tematem spotkania b“dzie dyskusja na temat organizacji kolejnego roku dzia»ania klubu. Pani przewodniczca Jane Wilk zaprasza wszystkich cz»onków klubu do wzi“cia udzia»u w tym bardzo waónym wydarzeniu. SCHODY PRZED KSCIOºEM W tym tygodniu rozpocz“liÑmy remont schodów przed koÑcio»em. Schody te by»y pop“kane i powsta»y pod nimi puste przestrzenie dlatego wymaga»y remontu. Nowe schody b“d zbudowane z betonu i granitu. Prace b“d prowadzone etapami w zaleónoÑci od dost“pnoÑci Ñrodków finansowych. Do dziÑ zebraliÑmy na „Projekty Jubileuszowe” $14,000. Serdecznie dzi“kujemy wszystkim parafianom, którzy rozumiej donios»oÑ wydarzenia jakim jest Jubileusz i troszcz si“ o utrzymanie parafii w dobrym stanie. Na czas trwania prac bardzo prosimy o korzystanie z bocznych wejу do koÑcio»a. Przy okazji Jubileuszu Rada Parafialna wskazuje jako waóne do zrobienia równieó wymian“ systemu grzewczego i chlodzcego oraz popraw“ nag»oÑnienia. Mamy nadzieje, óe dzi“ki zrozumieniu i hojnoÑci parafian b“dziemy mogli osignƒ zaplanowane cele. ZAMKNIECIE PARAFII ST. HEDWIG W SOUTHBRIDGE Po rozeznaniu si“ z realiami pastoralnymi w Southbridge zostala zamkni“ta polsko-amerykanska parafia p.w. Ðw. Jadwigi (St. Hedwig). Parafianom zaproponowano do»czenie do nowo utworzonej parafii p.w. B». Jana Paw»a II w Southbridge, która ma swoj siedzib“ na miejscu by»ej parafii Notre Dame. Wyraóamy swoje wspó»czucie wszystkim tym, którzy po wielu latach oddawania czci Bogu w swoim koÑciele opartym na polskiej kulturze i tradycjach, teraz b“d musieli dostosowa ƒ si “ do innych, pozbawionych polskich akcentów,warunków. Wszystkich tych, którzy nadal pragn przeóywaƒ swoja religijnoу w Page 5 kontekÑcie polskiej kultury i polskiej duchowoÑci zapraszamy do przy»czenia si“ do naszej wspólnoty Ñw. Cel by» bardzo jasny: pozostaƒ Polakiem i zachowaƒ swoja toósamoу. Zapewne równieó z takiego pragnienia zrodzi»a si“ niespe»na 125 lat temu nasza parafia. Dla naszych przodków by»a to duma i zaszczyt, óe mog mieƒ swój w»asny, polski koÑció» i szkole. Mogli poczuƒ si“ teraz jak u siebie, tworzyƒ coÑ dobrego, wychwalaƒ Boga i wspieraƒ si“ nawzajem. To by»a równieó niesamowita okazja do tego, by kultywowaƒ polskie tradycje, które stoj u podstaw toósamoÑci kaódego Polaka: nasze Ñwi“ta narodowe i religijne, tradycyjne ta½ce i Ñpiewy, nasza historia i pami“ƒ o wielkich synach i córkach naszego narodu… Ca»a ta duma i dziedzictwo naszych przodków przybywajcych na ameryka½sk ziemi“ dotrwa»a do naszych czasów i my równieó moóemy w niej braƒ udzia», zapisywaƒ nowe strony w historii Polonii i jej óycia zarówno spo»ecznego jak i religijnego. Czasy si“ zmieniaj, zmienia si“ teó i sposób óycia, ale w sercu kaódego Polaka na zawsze powinny pozostac najwaóniejsze wartosci: Bóg, Honor i Ojczyzna. Ca»y najbliószy rok b“dzie okazj do Ñwi“towania Jubileuszu naszej parafii. Postarajmy si“ rozbudziƒ w nas te radoÑci i nadzieje jakie przepe»nia»y serca naszych przodków. Spróbujmy rozbudziƒ na nowo ten sam entuzjazm jaki im przyÑwieca» i pozwala» na podejmowanie wyzwa½ i wysi»ków by nasza polskoу nigdy nie zgin“»a i aby zawsze Polak kojarzy» si“ wszystkim z przywizanym do Boga i KoÑcio»a godnym zaufania i gotowym do poÑwi“ce½ cz»owiekiem.
