SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT - March 20, 2011
Christ Jesus .... destroyed death and
brought life and immortality to light
through the Gospel.
– 2 Timothy 1:10b
Change. Lent is all about change and
change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to
leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old
man who decided to answer God’s call. Abram experiences
a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything
behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is
transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The
Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be
transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of
God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind?
Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by
God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey
of conversion.
The second collection this weekend is taken for the
Church in Latin America
WELCOME TO ST. JOSEPH SOLEMNITY!
This weekend we celebrate the solemnity of St. Joseph with a
concelebrated solemn Mass at 4 p.m. Father Jack Lizewski,
Chaplain of Anna Marie College, will be the homilist. This is also
the Youth Mass of the three Webster parishes. In addition, three
young men who promote the Gospel message throughout the
United States will enhance the celebration through their musical
talents. This Saturday is also a day of plenary and partial
indulgence.
This Sunday we welcome the pilgrimage from New Britain to
the 11 a.m. Mass. Every year they visit the Basilica and in their
special intentions seeking graces from God through the intercession
of St. Joseph.
PARTNERS IN CHARITY
The Diocese of Worcester announced the annual Partners in
Charity collection for 2011. The chairpersons for this charitable
drive in our parish is Betty Sabaj and Carolyn Swierzbin. This
annual appeal embraces charitable, pastoral and educational needs
of thousands of individuals and families of various ages throughout
the year. The goal for St. Joseph Basilica this year is $25,000. The
collection will be taken on March 27 in our parish.
In this time of economical difficulties the number of people who
need help is growing, and yet, despite our personal difficulties, we
want to extend a lifting hand and raise the spirit of those who
experience physical and spiritual needs.
SPECIAL THANKS
Now that the winter season is over, we greatly appreciate the
assistance we received from Mr. Wesley Mroczka and Mr. Dariusz
Ochocki for their generous donation of time and equipment. The
parish was able to save a substantial amount of money.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK
On Sunday, April 3rd at 2 p.m. the Sacrament of the Sick will
be administered in our St. Joseph Basilica. The Rev. Sean
McGillicuddy, the Redemptorist priest who is conducting the
Retreat will speak and assist with the anointing. You are
encouraged to bring your loved ones for this special service.
Traditionally, the Sacred Heart Society members have been
available to assist with the elderly, wheelchairs etc. in the
church.
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DRE
RCIA. Starting March 27th for the next 3 Sundays of Lent at the
9:30 a.m. Mass after the homily we will be celebrating what is
called “The Scrutinies” with our elect, Jennifer Acude who will
be entering the Catholic Church at our Easter vigil. These Rites
are celebrated to help deliver the elect from the power of sin and
Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them
strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Please continue praying for our elect.
Religious Ed - Classes 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Monday.
Confirmation - Classes are on Monday nights 7-8:15 p.m. in the
school. Please be prompt.
Children Lenten Masses. 9:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday during
Lent. All families with children are invited to come and celebrate
the Eucharist.
Lenten Flower Sacrifices. Each week please remind your
children to make loving sacrifices and good deeds for others
offering them up to Jesus. We will continue with the practice of
placing a flower at the base of the Lenten Cross in exchange for
their good deed.
FINANCE BOARD MEETING
Members of the Finance Board met Wednesday to review
various ways of cutting expenses but it was difficult to find any
unnecessary spending. However, in order to be financially
responsible, we have to find ways no matter how painful they
may be. It was decided that the office in the rectory will be
closed on Thursdays with no secretary or priest available except
on an emergency basis. The part-time secretaries who each work
three days per week will now work two days each week. This is
not a significant savings since they work for minimum rates
without insurance etc. Parishioners who have business with
the rectory are requested to come on Tuesdays or
Wednesdays. We also ask that parishioners plan ahead and
make any phone requests on these days. This change will
negatively effect the efficiency of work and our service to the
parishioners.
CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP
Special thank you to everyone who made the Soup Meal such a
success. We raised a total of $1132 and will be able to donate $566 to

AUCTION
The Annual Auction of St. Joseph School sponsored by the
HSA which took place last Saturday at the Point Breeze
Restaurant was a great success. The crowd was very cheerful and
friendly, the food was delicious, and the ambience of the
restaurant was superb. There were many exciting items in the
Chinese Auction and Silent Auction. But the most interesting and
very popular was the live auction–bidding between parents and
friends reached an all-time high! The auctioneer, Craig
Holmberg, did a fantastic job (is he considering becoming a
professional caller as a second career??!) Special thanks to
Cindi Gardner and her committee who did an outstanding job in
decorating and setting the scene for an enjoyable evening!
Preliminary reports show that the net income is $11,600.
.
Special Announcements
It seems that the Auction also serves as a launching pad for
important information. Two years ago we announced during the
auction the first million dollar donation for the school gym. This
year also several important announcements were made lifting the
spirits of the participants.
Mr. Theodore Dawicki announced his donation of $65,000 for
a statue of John Paul II to be carved of granite and be displayed
in front of the rectory at St. Joseph Basilica grounds. Mr.
Dawicki in his remarks said “each day is a beautiful day when
you are above the ground. I want to see this monument dedicated
to the greatest Pope, Polish Pope, when I am still above the
ground.” He dedicated this monument in memory of his parents,
Lucy and Valenty Dawicki. This monument will be completed at
the end of this summer. We are grateful to Mr. Dawicki and his
wife Helen for their deep faith, generosity and vision. It should
be noted that Mr. Dawicki of his own free will requested this
monument to be erected in his family’s memory.
Scholarship. Msgr. Czarnecki announced that a scholarship fund
of $15,000 was established by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Nowak
for the academic year 2011/2012. This important grant enlarged
by other donations will provide the needed help to the talented
students who want a Catholic education but cannot afford it..
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Nowak, for your thoughtfulness and
your spirit of caring and sharing.
St. Joseph School Gym Expansion. Also, a very encouraging
announcement was made by Mr. and Mrs. Marion Winters of
rare books to the new school library and their pledge to raise
$125,000 toward the Library project. He joins Mr. John and Jane
Gogolinski who already donated $125,000 to the Library.Mr.
Winters and his wife moved several years ago from Washington
to Webster. He has volunteered his services to the St. Joseph
Gym expansion committee. He is well known across the country
for his cultural involvement and philanthropic spirit, especially
Page 4
on behalf of young people. May God bless you and your family!
Educational Pledge. The final announcement of the evening was a
joyful and uplifting surprise. A businessman from the state of New
York pledged one million dollars. This money was given to Msgr.
Czarnecki for educational purposes and will become a restricted
account. Although the donor never heard of St. Joseph School he
intends to visit in the future. Although this account is restricted, Msgr.
Czarnecki said that it will be spent for the St. Joseph School Gym
Expansion.
St. Joseph has been a patron of the gym and expansion of the school
and how providential that the announcements coincide with his
solemnity on March 19th. The above significant financial contributions
bring us much closer to realizing the children’s dream of a new gym
