Stewardship Note. When will I have given enough–of my income, of my time, of my talents? Today’s Gospel suggests that only total stewardship will do: “When you have done all you have been commanded to do, say,‘We are useless servants. We have done no more than our duty.’” See Luke 17:10 Respect Life. As we mark another Respect Life Sunday, we are perhaps tempted to ask with Habakkuk, “How long, O Lord, I cry for help but you do not listen? I cry out to you, ‘Violence!’ but you do not intervene.” The Lord’s response, “Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets....For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint.’ Respect for all human life is that vision which “will surely come.” TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 3, 2010 Come, let us bow down in worship; Let us kneel before the Lord who made us. – Psalm 95:6 The second collection this weekend is for the Diocesan Obligations The second collection next weekend is directed toward the Utility and Energy Costs DIVINE MERCY DEVOTIONS This Sunday, the first Sunday of the month, at 3 p.m. we will pray to the Divine Mercy for special graces needed in our lives and in the world. The Chaplet, which God gave to the world through St. Faustina, is a beautiful prayer that has a powerful efficacy to repair the hurt wrought by sin. Jesus told Faustina “The greater the misery of a soul, the greater its right to My mercy....On the cross, the fountain of My Mercy was opened wide by the lance for all souls–no one have I excluded!” If you never attended this devotion, please come and join the faithful in this beautiful expression of our belief in the powers of the Divine Mercy. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI St. Francis was born in Assisi, Italy in 1182 to a merchant couple who imported luxurious fabrics and sold them in Italy. Francis did not follow in the footsteps of his parents but decided to join the second crusade. But on his first night out, he had a vision: the Lord was sending him back. He then faced the jeers of his neighbors, who thought him a coward. Francis, undeterred, turned away from war to peace and vowed he would await a further sign from God. He then had a vision in which God told him to repair His church. Francis took this literally and with his own hands began to rebuild the church where he had been praying. But God meant a bigger church: Francis’ mission was to help rebuild the whole faith. Francis preached about humility, poverty, simplicity and prayer to everyone, even the birds, whom he thought of as God’s special creations. By his life of poverty and wandering, while good for his soul, was hard on his body. Although he died in 1226, the Order he founded, the Franciscan Friars, to this day carry on his humble teachings in every corner of the globe. His feast day is observed on October 4. THE MONTH OF OCTOBER – ROSARY MONTH Rosary devotions are deeply routed in the history of the Catholic Church but especially in Polish tradition. The month of October is dedicated to the prayers of the rosary. In the rosary we reflect on the mystery of life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. All the popes had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and prayed the rosary faithfully, privately and publicly. Pope Paul VI in his encyclical Marialis Cultus stated The Rosary is a biblical and evangelical prayer and is a contemplation of the mystery of the history of our salvation. I encourage all the faithful to pray the rosary during the month of October at home and in church. Page 3 October 3, 2010 - 3 pazdziernik 2010 r. Schedule of devotions: Sundays - following the 11 am Mass Wednesdays and Fridays - 7 p.m. bilingual Tuesdays and Thursdays - 6:30 pm at St. Andrew Bobola Church - bilingual SCHOOL NEWS Once again we welcome 12 new students from a private Catholic school in Warsaw, Poland to St. Joseph School grades 7 and 8. They are: Damian Siemianiak, Tomasz Wiacek, Krzysztof Powierza, Jerzy Szuniewicz, Weronika Tomaszewska, Barbara Kedziorek, Maria Salamon, Gabriela Wienke, Witoria Bartuzel, Adrianna Gospodarczyk, Julie Michiewicz, Justyna Wasilewska. It is a mutually learning experience for St. Joseph Students and our visitors, especially in the areas of science and math, where European standards exceed even the leading American schools. In addition, experience of different cultures and new contacts in a time of global education and economy appears to be the right strategy. We are grateful to the following families who extended their hospitality and accepted the students into their homes: Betsy and Mark Robbins, Theresa and Kyle Haggerty, Sue and John Tarasiak, Sylwia and Steve Kohut, Diane and Ray Sullivan, Malgorzata and Jan Sudyka, Edyta and Piotr Puczydlowski, Jane and Robert Gaudreau, Katarzyna and Zbigniew Milosek, Marion and JoLouise Winters. DIOCESAN STEWARDSHIP EDUCATION CONFERENCE The Diocese of Worcester is hosting the Fourth Annual Stewardship Educational Conference for priests, parish staff, leaders, and representatives and Board members of various organizations. The conference will take place on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St. Ann Parish Center in Worcester. For the those who will volunteer to attend, the parish will pay the registration fee and lunch. The conference will feature national speakers and provide family and community experience. Their message is always useful, at times entertaining, and helpful in parish pastoral mission. The deadline for registration is October 12th. I encourage the heads of parish and school organizations, members of the Parish Council and Knights of Columbus to take part in this popular and needed conference. Please call the rectory to register before the 12th. ISSUES OF CONCERN Recently we experienced difficulties around the Basilica and the school neighborhood. Please report to the police any suspicious behavior or disturbance of peace, especially during the night or any other activities which are inappropriate in the vicinity of the church and the school. Please note that your name will be kept confidential. A QUESTION TO PONDER I have been asked from time to time a question by some parishioners “I have frequent dreams of my deceased wife, husband, friends, parents or other unexplained incidents which bring the deceased to my consciousness. What does this mean?” Generally we do not have control over our dreams which are a part of our sub-consciousness, however, such frequent occurrences may indicate also that your deceased loved one needs help. The soul who at the time of death is burdened with a temporal punishment due to already forgiven sins must undergo purification in purgatory. We do not know what is the nature or length of this punishment. which is different to everyone in terms of nature and duration. Since the souls in purgatory are helpless they depend on those whom they left behind for prayers and good deeds on their behalf. There is unanimous agreement between Eastern and Western churches on the purification status terminology. Western theology describes purgatory more in terms of punishment; but Eastern churches see this purification in terms of maturation, growth and contemplation of God. It is the official teaching of the Church that souls in purgatory are deprived of joy and happiness in the presence of God until their temporal punishment is over. It is highly recommended to offer in such instances a Mass for the deceased one, which is the highest and most effective prayer or perform good deeds in memory of the loved one. The nature of reparation should reflect the shortcomings of the deceased loved one e.g. if he/she offended or unjustly treated someone or financially hurt somebody or, God forbid, was not a practicing Catholic, or was oblivious to the corporal deeds of mercy, then they should be offset by good deeds in this category. Sny kontrolowane s przez nasz podÑwiadomoу, nie mamy wi“c wp»ywu na to, co kiedy nam si“ przyÑni. Jednakóe, jeóeli ta sama osoba pojawia si“ we Ñnie wiele razy, to moóe oznaczaƒ, óe jej dusza potrzebuje pomocy. Dusza, która w chwili Ñmierci obarczona jest grzechami wczeÑniej odpuszczonymi, musi przejу proces oczyszczania w czyуcu. Nie wiem jak to d»ugo trwa i co si“ wtedy dzieje. Poniewaó dusze w czyуcu juó nic dla siebie zrobiƒ nie mog potrzebuj pomocy swoich bliskich w formie modlitwy i dobrych uczynków w intencji tych dusz. Nauka koÑcio»a mówi, óe dusze w czyуcu pozbawione s radoÑci przebywania w obliczu Boga, aó do czasu zako½czenia kary. Dlatego, jeóeli osoba zmar»a cz“sto si“ Ñni, wskazane jest, aby w intencji jej duszy ofiarowaƒ Msze Ñw. i wykonywaƒ dobre uczynki ku jej pami“ci.
