The most recent example of the extraordinary efforts made by Catholic Relief Services is the response currently being made to support the people of Haiti. Beyond Haiti, the efforts of CRS continue to support development projects in more than 80 other nations. Please be generous. SACRIFICIAL OFFERINGS - March 7, 2010 Weekly $5227 (incl. $320 in loose money); Diocesan Obligations $1326.43 (incl. $162.43 in loose money); Fuel $255. PSALM 49 Emptiness of Riches Hear this, all you peoples, give heed, all who dwell in the world, men both low and high, rich and poor alike! My lips will speak words of wisdom. My heart is full of insight. I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve my problem. Why should I fear in evil days the malice of the foes who surround me, men who trust in their wealth, and boast of the vastness of their riches? For no man can buy his own ransom, or pay a price to God for his life. The ransom of his soul is beyond him. He cannot buy life without end, nor avoid coming to the grave. He knows that wise men and fools must both perish and leave their wealth to others. Their graves are their homes for ever, their dwelling place from age to age, though their names spread wide through the land. In his riches, man lacks wisdom: he is like the beasts that are destroyed. You cannot serve both God and mammon. PARTNERS IN CHARITY The diocesan collection known as Partners in Charity will be taken on the weekend of March 20/21. Over 60 parishes participate in this collection during the Lenten season. Our quota remains the same as lat year, $20,250. The Partners in Charity supports 29 programs and agencies which help the people of the diocese. Catholic Charities receives most of the funding in this network. The Youville House, Crozier House, Mercy Centre, Pernet Family Health Service, McAuley-Nazareth Home for Boys are just a few examples where the needy are assisted. You may consider pledging a gift over a period of ten months. I realize that some of you can only afford to make a onetime gift and your generosity is appreciated, but many of us are able to pledge a gift over several months or over the full ten-month pledging period. We all know that these are difficult and uncertain times for many. We all have a responsibility to care for one another. Let us count our blessings and see again what we can do for others. We are grateful to our chairpersons Betty Sabaj and Carolyn Swierzbin who dedicate the gift of time to the works of charity by supervising this endeavor in our parish. WELCOME POLISH AMERICAN VETERANS AND AUX. We recognize the presence of this distinguished group at the 8:15 liturgy this morning as they observe their annual Communion Mass followed by breakfast at Club Quarters on Ray Street. By participating in the Mass they follow their motto to serve God and country. The veterans are role models and examples of patriotism and dedication in preserving our freedodm. Thanks to American soldiers and their sacrifices many nations in the world enjoy the gift to practice their religion in a free and independent country. PARISH COUNCIL Regular monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room. Page 3 March 14, 2010 - 14 marzec 2010 r. This diocesan newspaper is a teaching arm of the bishop. Your continued support is essential to this mission. The cost for the yearly subscription is only $23! PARISH RETREAT The Lenten Retreat at Saint Joseph Basilica has been scheduled from Thursday, March 18 in Polish, with the official conclusion on Sunday, March 21 with the Gorzkie Zale services. Please refer to the Polish section of the bulletin for the schedule. The retreat in English will begin on Saturday, March 20 at 4 p.m. and conclude on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. Several preachers will lead the English retreat. The schedule is as follows: Saturday, March 20 at 4 p.m.- Rev. Michael Roy, preacher; Sunday, March 21 at the 9:30 Mass -Rev. Richard Trainor; Monday, March 22 at 7 p.m. prayer service with Msgr. James Moroney. The topics will address the vital issues of our life of faith and the role of St. Joseph in our family and parish community life. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit that the people who are in most need of God’s grace will take an active part in these sacred days. Please encourage your family members and friends to attend the retreat with you. SOLEMNITY OF SAINT JOSEPH On Friday, March 19 we will observe the solemnity of Saint Joseph, and the feast day of our patron and parish, traditionally known as Odpust. In preparation for this day, a 9-day novena began on March 11 after the morning Mass and will conclude on March 19 at the 7 p.m. liturgy. We invite the parishioners, various organizations with their respective banners and emblems, Parish Council, altar servers and Children of Mary to attend. This day is also a day of indulgence granted by the Holy Father to Saint Joseph Basilica. Indulgences may be obtained under the usual conditions which means visiting the Basilica, receiving Communion (and the sacrament of penance if necessary) and praying in the intention of the Holy Father. The indulgence could be plenary or partial. The plenary indulgence may be obtained only once; partial indulgence as many times as you visit the Basilica and fulfill the above conditions. —On Wednesday, March 17, we observe the festivity of St. Patrick, the missionary of Ireland. The life of this great man was dedicated to the Church and the people. Although he was not Irish, Ireland was his favorite country where he spent most of his life in missionary work. We wish a Happy St. Patrick’s Day to our Irish brothers and sisters! PILGRIMAGE TO SAINT JOSEPH BASILICA The traditional pilgrimage from the regional parishes under the auspices of the Church of the Holy Cross in New Britain CT will come to St. Joseph Basilica on Sunday, March 21 with their pastor.
