Stewardship Note: “Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks,
and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared ...” (Nehemiah
8:10). Ezra’s instructions to the people show us that God does not
forbid us from enjoying the good things in life. However, He
expects us to share our blessings with those who are in need.

Word of Life. Those who are active in the production and
dissemination of new media content, therefore, should strive to
respect the dignity and worth of the human person. If the new
technologies are to serve the good of individuals and of society, all
users will avoid the sharing of words and images that are degrading
of human beings, that promote hatred and intolerance, that debase
the goodness and intimacy of human sexuality or that exploit the
week and vulnerable.” – Pope Benedict XVI, May 24, 2009
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY
TIME
January 24, 2010
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring
glad tidings to the poor. – Luke 4:18a
A Holy Time. For those of us who live
farther north, it is now the heart of winter. And for all of us,
north and south, the holidays are over. We may sense the start
of a long, hard stretch of blank time. These opening Sundays of
“Ordinary Time” reflect this feeling of beginning.
Today’s reading from the book of Nehemiah tells with great
drama how the people gathered to hear, as though for the first
time, a solemn reading of God’s word. As they listened, they
fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, “Today is
holy to the Lord your God. Do not be sad, and do not weep”
(Nehemiah 8:9). Today’s Gospel tells a similar dramatic tale.
We are presented with the very beginning of Jesus’ public life.
The people gathered to listen, and Jesus proclaimed the
fulfillment of the prophet’s words.
The second collection this weekend is for Relief in Haiti.
On January 12th an earthquake which measured 7.0 on the Richter
scale, unleashed tremendous damage and a staggering loss of life
in the poor country of Haiti. On Wednesday, the 20th of January
another earthquake of a 6.0 magnitude struck Haiti again causing
unprecedented damage. In a spirit of solidarity and our Catholic
charity we are called to get involved to alleviate human misery.
Perhaps a generous monetary donation, especially from those who
have more than they need, would be an appropriate response. In the
wake of this disaster the Diocese of Worcester is making a
commitment to assist the people of Haiti. Bishop McManus
requests all parishioners to be generous in offering assistance to our
unfortunate brothers and sisters. The collection will be forwarded
to the diocese designated as Assistance for Haiti.
The second collection next weekend is designated as the
Catholic Home Missions Appeal.
CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
The proclamation of the Gospel is the first priority of the Catholic
Church in the United States. Pope Benedict XVI repeatedly and
boldly asserts that the Church must proclaim Christ to all people.
Indeed, the very purpose of the Church is to evangelize. The
Catholic Home Missions Appeal support many essential pastoral
services, including youth ministry, in mission dioceses across the
country. Home mission dioceses often exist in rural settings with
struggling economics, long distances between parishes, and a lack
of priests and trained lay people to sustain parishes. Bishop
McManus writes “....I encourage you to be generous to this appeal
in a special collection to be taken at the Lord’s Day Masses in all
the parishes throughout our diocese next weekend, January 30th and
31st. Through our personal generosity in this important appeal, we
will all share in the work of evangelization in the United States.
INTERESTED IN BECOMING A DEACON?
Find out everything you wanted to know about being a deacon.
Come to the Information Session scheduled on Monday, February
Page 3
January 24, 2010 - 24 styczen 2010 r.
1, 2010 at Our Lady of Loreto Parish Center which is located at 33
Massasoit Road, Worcester. If you’ve ever thought about
becoming a deacon and wanted to know more about what it would
involve, now is your opportunity! There is no obligation. Wives are
encouraged to attend. The Session begins at 7 p.m. (Snow date:
2/03/10).
DONATIONS
We are most grateful to the family who, through their annual
savings, purchased and donated a beautiful chalice to celebrate the
Mass. This chalice will be blessed at the 11 a.m. liturgy this
Sunday, January 24, 2010. We deeply appreciate this generosity
which came from a family’s want, not surplus. We entreat God’s
mercy on these generous donors that anytime the Eucharistic
sacrifice will be celebrated using this chalice they share God’s
blessings. Dziekuje i Bog Zaplac!
MEGA RAFFLE
On February 27, 2010 the drawing of the MEGA RAFFLE will
take place. We are pleased to say that the vast majority are
purchasing the 3 tickets for $100. Please your neighbors and
friends to take advantage of this opportunity and win some money
for your personal needs or home improvements.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
On Sunday, January 31, 2010 all schools throughout the United
States will be celebrating CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK Dividends for Life. All week St. Joseph School will hold open
house–on Sunday, January 31, 2010 from 12 noon to 2 p.m., and on
Wednesday, February 3rd from 5:30 to 7 p.m. On Sunday,
February 7, Bishop McManus will celebrate the 9:30 liturgy in
conclusion of Catholic Schools Week.
Prospective families who inquire about St. Joseph School will
have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship, win one of three
prizes of $200 which could be applied to the tuition, and see the
presentation of modern technology in a classroom setting. To
qualify for the above prospective families must be physically
present in the school on one of the above dates, complete a form
and tour the school.
In the present society Catholic education is a choice. Since their
choice involves the success or failure of the future of their child, a
decision should be made after carefully researching and studying
many educational institutions. Parents who care for their children
should make an educated decision to assure that their child in this
global economy is intellectually challenged and receives character
formation to compete in the 21st century environment.
Spaghetti Supper. A delicious pasta dinner, salad, dessert and
coffee will be served by the HSA on Wednesday, February 3rd
from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets at $6 for adults and $4 for children
and seniors may be purchased from the school office or the rectory.
It is an excellent opportunity to have a good meal, meet friends and
at the same time support St. Joseph School, more so if you are an
alumnus.

DEVOTIONS TO SAINT JOSEPH
For centuries St. Joseph has been venerated
by the faithful, the most popular saint in the
Universal Church. He is a patron of families,
marriages, fathers, carpenters, working people
as well as patron of a happy death. People seek
his intercession in every area of life--when
they lose their job, when selling or buying a
house, when faced with crucial decisions etc.
Every Wednesday at our Basilica a votive
Mass to our patron is celebrated at 6:30 a.m.
At the end of the Mass a novena prayer is recited in the intention
of the participants. We kindly ask the parishioners to obtain the
needed blessings and graces through the intercession of St. Joseph
by attending this Mass.
