SACRIFICIAL OFFERINGS - January 31, 2010
Weekly $3398.25 (Incl. $209.25 in loose money); Diocesan
Obligations $70; Fuel $544; Catholic Home Missions Appeal $572
(incl. $116 in loose money).
Stewardship Note: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom
shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (Isaiah
6:8) Every day – in little ways and in big ways – God asks, “Whom shall
I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry or just someone
to open a door for an overburdened stranger, God constantly looks to see
if we are willing to respond with the eagerness that Isaiah showed when
he answered, “Here I am, send me!”
FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 7, 2010
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with
all my heart, for you have heard the
words of my mouth. – Psalm 138:1
God’s Call. In today’s scriptures we hear
three instances of people receiving and responding to a call
from God. These accounts follow the pattern of most scriptural
call narratives: a divine presence appears and speaks; the
person expresses fear or unworthiness, receives encouragement,
and finally responds to God’s call. In today’s Gospel, despite
Simon Peter’s protest that he is a sinner, Jesus calls James,
John, and Simon to follow him. They leave everything they
have and follow Jesus–that is, they become Jesus’ disciples.
These scriptures can challenge us to take stock of our lives.
How do we experience Jesus’ call to discipleship in our lives?
How well and faithfully are we responding?
The second collection this Sunday is for Diocesan Obligations
The second collection next weekend is for Utility and Energy Costs
SCOUT SUNDAY
Today at the 8:15 liturgy we welcome the members of the Cub
Scout and Boy Scout Troop 173 as they celebrate the
100th anniversary of the founding of Boy Scouts in
the United States. They are thankful for the past
seventy-three years of continual sponsorship by St.
Joseph Basilica. The troop remembers in a special
way Victor Stefaniak, the first scoutmaster, who
passed away this past year. “May the great master of all scouts be
with us until we meet again.”
WELCOME BISHOP MCMANUS
We welcome His Excellency Robert J. McManus to conclude the
celebration of Catholic Schools Week at the 9:30 a.m. liturgy.
During this past week, all the Catholic schools, colleges and
universities across this land renew their commitment to Catholic
education by reflecting on past achievements and planning the
future. In every segment of social, political and business life the
number of individuals who received a Catholic education is
increasingly growing because of the best education and formation
of character, e.g. the U.S. Supreme Court has five Catholics on the
bench.
In our diocese we are fortunate to have about 30 Catholic schools
and colleges where thousands of young people aspire to have a
successful career and meaningful life. During the past week, St.
Joseph School had many parents with children visit our school. Our
students participated in various religious and social events
throughout the week. Religious guest speakers visited the school to
speak about vocations; the students enjoyed a crazy hat day and
Spanish Fashion Show; a parent/teacher basketball game was on
the agenda ; and the teachers enjoyed an Appreciation Luncheon at
the rectory. Let us continue to pray and support our St. Joseph
School which educates the future generation.
Revelation. In the Old Testament, the New Testament lies concealed; in
the New Testament, the Old Testament lies revealed. – St. Augustine

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
Every year St. Joseph School selects a person who made a
contribution beyond the call of duty to Catholic education. This
year the distinctive award called “Partners in Education 2010" is
presented to Sr. Jeanne Marie Akalski and Sr. Mary Ann Papiez.
Sr. Jeanne has served two separate teaching assignments at St.
Joseph’s, the most recent for four years and Sr. Mary Ann has been
teaching at our school for ten years. Both of the Sisters
distinguished themselves with extra-ordinary effort to serve the
children by providing private tutoring to the students, teaching
evening Religious Education classes, and participating in various
programs sponsored by the parish and involved in other social
work. The Sisters, as teachers, have a rare ability to crystallize the
values of the students and enhance their spiritual development. This
award will be presented by Bishop McManus at the 9:30 a.m.
liturgy. On behalf of the school, teachers, and parish administration
we extend our sincere Congratulations!
DEVOTION TO THE DIVINE MERCY
The first Sunday of each month is devoted to the Divine Mercy
with special services at 3 p.m. This afternoon we will sing the
Chaplet to the Divine Mercy followed by adoration and
benediction. A devotion most dear to Our Lord is the veneration of
His passion at the very hour that recalls His death on the Cross.
The growing number of participants at this afternoon service
indicates that the devotion to the Divine Mercy is spreading.
ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB
The monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 9th at
7 p.m. in the School Cafeteria. This meeting will include a brief
presentation from Tom Hijec concerning changes and services at
Harrington Health Care at Hubbard. Following the presentation, we
will play Bingo for cash prizes! Hostess for the evening will be
Esther Lesse. Donations for the Bakeless Bake Sale will also be
accepted at the meeting. – Judi Dery, Publicity Chairperson

Catholic Theological Union in Chicago will address the attendees
on “Catholics on Call.” The day will start at 8:45 a.m. with coffee,
Mass at 10 a.m., open discussions, keynote talks, lunch, and
conclude at 4 p.m. Registration cost by March 1 - $20; after March

MOVIE GOER BEWARE
The movie Legion made by Sony Corporation and directed by
Scott Stewart is scheduled to be released soon. It is a movie
dangerous to your faith! The director, neither Catholic nor
Christian, presents good as evil and vice-versa. The film drains
away any hope that people could have from God. It leads to
despair. What can a person do? Simply don’t go and ask your
family and friends not to go!
YEAR OF THE PRIEST OBSERVANCE
The clergy of Deanery VII will celebrate the “Year of the Priest”
on Wednesday, March 3rd with a special Mass at 7 p.m. at Sacred
Heart Church Webster, MA with Bishop McManus as the main
celebrant. We encourage all the faithful of our parish to join the
clergy at Sacred Heart Church in the spirit of prayer for all the
priests of the Deanery.
CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP
The Youth Group is sponsoring a light lunch to raise money for ‘The
Bread of Life’ program and ‘Society of St. Vincent de Paul’

Hall. Anyone and everyone is welcomed and encouraged to attend. Menu
includes a variety of soups, stews, chili, bread, dessert, coffee, tea, juice
and water. Cost: Donations of any amount gladly accepted.
A silent auction to raise additional funds will auction off soup bowls,
hand painted by the Youth Group members to the top bidder.
