(2 Corinthians 8:14) Economic crisis can teach us supply their needs ..... many valuable stewardship lessons. We are quickly realizing that as individuals and as a society we really did not need everything that we wanted. We are also learning to count our blessings and to see that we have been abundantly blessed by God. And, hopefully, we are becoming more willing to share our gifts with those who truly are in need. THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 28, 2009 You changed my mourning into dancing; 0 Lord, my God,forever will I give you thanks. - Psalm 30:13 0 Lord, Be My Help. Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through tsunamis and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, "Why" This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the gift of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today's Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, "Why?" At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: "Hear, 0 Lord, and have pity on me; 0 Lord, be my helper."Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. The second collection this weekend is for the Holy Father called Peter's Pence and all other envelopes remaining in your June packet SACRED HEART SOCIETY We welcome the Sacred Heart Society members to the 8:15 liturgy this Sunday morning when the installation of new members will take place. Following the installation, members are invited for refreshments in the Parish Conference Room. SOLEMNITY OF SS. PETER AND PAUL This solemnity is a feast commemorating the martyrdom in Rome of the apostles Saint Peter and Paul of Tarsus, observed on June A 29. The celebration is of ancient origin, and ___________ is one of the higher ranking holy days during the ecclesiastical year, but is not a holy day _________ of obligation, however, in Vatican City, it is a holiday. On this day newly appointed archbishops receive the primary symbol of their office, called pallium, from the pope. With the celebration of this solemnity, the year of St. Peter will conclude. Day of Indulgence. On the solemnity of SS Peter and Paul, Saint Joseph Basilica has the privilege to grant indulgences to the faithful. A plenary indulgence may be obtained under the usual conditions, which means reception of Communion, confession if needed, a visit to Saint Joseph Basilica, and prayer in the intention of the Holy Father. A plenary indulgence may be obtained only once and a partial indulgence as many times as the Basilica is visited and a prayer is said in the intention of the Holy Father. FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION A brief adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place after the 7 a.m. Mass on Friday, July 3rd praying the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy and benediction. An evening Mass will be celebrated at 7 in Polish, as scheduled. June 28. 2009 - 28 czerwiec 2009 r. A WORD FROM THE PASTOR The festival at Saint Joseph Basilica was the first major event in town and, as always, opened the vacation season. It was a very enjoyable and rewarding social, cultural and fund raising event. A large number of people from various cities and even states attended the festival. I am grateful to the kitchen staff under the leadership of Artie Hunt and to his co-workers for the countless hours of work in preparing the food for so many people; the grounds crew under the leadership of Michael Kane; General Treasurer James Davey; and all the chairpersons and volunteers from the parents of the school children as well as parishioners who dedicated their time and talent to make this event successful. A word of gratitude to our custodian, Eugene Rudnicki; the Principal and teachers of St. Joseph School; and the rectory staff. Thank you to chairpersons Cindi Gardner and Stefanie Fasulo for their leadership in coordinating the important Money Raffle fund raiser. Above all, we are grateful to God for the break in the clouds of the gloomy days and giving us some sunshine. The gross income will be communicated to you as soon as it is available. Money Raffle Winners: l prize -$5000 Tessa Mailloux; prize-S 1000 Paula Aubin; 3' prize-$500 Marcus Robbins, 4 ' prize$100 Regina Sielawa. Congratulations! SOAPY'S FLOWER GARDEN We owe special gratitude to the family of Felix "Soapy" Miller for cleaning and creating a flower garden between the rectory and the church in memory of Soapy. By doing so, they continue his legacy of dedication to the church. It was Soapy's favorite area in which he spent many hours for several years planting flowers, especially lilies, and keeping the area well kept. It is a beautiful Catholic tradition to perform acts of charity on behalf of a deceased loved one and through this act extend their service and mission to the Church. The family hired and paid for professional people to clear the area and then planted various flowers to beautify that portion of the landscape. DONATION TO THE PARISH CENTER AND GYM FUND I am pleased to announce a donation of $100,000 for the Children's Playground from a family who has special ties to our parish. They want to remain anonymous for the time being. I am profoundly grateful to these individuals whose vision, sharing and, above all, their faith in God which motivates them to respond to the needs of children. The existing playground will be relocated, expanded and provided with appropriate additional equipment for the learning and enjoyment ofthe children. The children, especially from Pre-K and Kindergarten, learn and interact with one another not only in the classroom but also during various recreational activities. The emerging personality of a child includes selfconcept, self-esteem, self regulation of emotions and empathy. Cognitive ability plays a significant role in the nature of play as well as regulating the formation and expression of one's personality. A major benefit of play is also physical growth which is an outlet for muscle and coordination of development. Jesus loved the children and used them as an example of many virtues, and therefore there must be a special place in heaven for individuals who help the children. BINGO EVERY SUNDAY AT ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL Doors open at 4 pm - Games begin at 5:45 pm Good Neighbor Game Progressive Jackpot - Two Winner Take All's Free Coffee - Free Pastry Members of St. Joseph Polish Women's Club will assist from 4 to 6pm We recognize the following individuals for their continued dedication in making the Bingo successful: Rudy Bergeron, Dick Skrocki, Ed Kohut, Brian Kondek and Stella Miller and - our own Virginia Woznicki brings baked goods every week for the enjoyment of the players. CORPUS CHRIST! PROCESSION I am pleased that the Corpus Christi liturgical pageant with Bishop Daniel P. Reilly attracted a large number of faithful from the Webster-Dudley communities and many families from Connecticut and Rhode Island. The public worship of the Eucharistic Jesus has a long tradition in many countries of the world and is becoming more and more a regular form of worship in our country. I am grateful to all those who attended, parish organizations, First Communion children, altar servers, and boy scouts. I would like to recognize the Sacred Heart Society for preparing the special outdoor altar at the rectory. I also want to take this occasion to thank Mrs. Sylvia Kitka and her crew for preparing the grounds and the church for this Eucharistic devotion. NEW PARISHIONERS We are pleased to welcome the following who recentlyjoined Saint Joseph Basilica parish: Shaun and Maggie Boynton, Marc and Katarzyna Perry, John and Deborah Cardoni, Anthony and Stephanie Latuga, Nancie Zecco, Clayton Harris, Tomasz and Agnieszka Dziubasik, Marcin and Anna Milewski, Monika Ellis, Donald and Marilyn Bernier, Robert Lingis, Mary Lingis, Carolyn Rocheleau. Know that the Newman Catholic Center offers the opportunity to grow in your faith as well as participate in community outreach. Student-run activities and the 7 PM Student Mass are great ways to make lasting friendships. Feel free to e-mail us with questions at [email protected] or visit us online at www.newmanumass.org INDEPENDENCE DAY As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who served with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the "Military Vicariate." In ** 1985 Pope John Paul II created the * * "Archdiocese for Military Services, * * USA." Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMA does not ordain priests, but accept priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. Fourth of July is celebrated by many families in the United States with traditional cookouts. As you gather with your family and friends, let us remember to thank God for our gift of freedom. May you all have a pleasant, healthy and safe Fourth of July!
