Saint Joseph Basilica Parish of the Third Millennium 53 Whitcomb Street, Webster, MA 01570 • Phone: 508-943-0467 • Fax: 508-943-0808 E-mail: [email protected] • Parish WebSite: www.saintjosephbasilica.com THE JOURNEY OF LENT is about being born again by participating in the death and resurrection of Jesus and about that journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. The journey of Lent with its climax on Good Friday and Easter, is about embarking on the way of Jesus on that path of mortality and transformation that is at the very center of the Christian life. When you think of it, who of us does not yearn for this? Who of us does not yearn for a fuller connection to life? Who does not yearn for an identity that releases us from anxiety and self-preoccupation? May we this Lent experience that internal transformation that is at the center of the Christian life. WIELKI POST to czas powtórnego, duchowego narodzenia, poprzez uczestnictwo w męce i zmartwychwstaniu Jezusa. Wielki Post to czas nawrócenia i pokuty. To czas zastanowienia się nad swoim życiem w kontekście przykazań Bożych. To czas przygotowania się do świętowania najważniejszej uroczystości Chrześcijaństwa — Wielkanocy. To czas dobrych postanowień i modlitwy połączonej z osobistym wysiłkiem wytrwania w nich. SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES For the Week of March 15 through March 21, 2009 Blessed Mother Altar Candle 1 - In memory of James Gogolinski (1st anniv.) You shall not have other gods beside me. – Exodus 20:2a, 3 Keep Holy the Sabbath. There’s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments (not the movie, the book). The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. The second collection this weekend is for the Partners in Charity Campaign The second collection next weekend is to defray the costs of the Retreat PARTNERS IN CHARITY CAMPAIGN The annual Diocesan Campaign Partners in Charity is the lifeline to support so many diocesan charitable agencies who serve people in need. In addition that fund supports the seminarians who are preparing for the priesthood and for retired priests. In this economic difficult time to cut human services to many people would contradict the spirit of service which the Church wants to provide. By giving our share to this noble purpose we are fulfilling the mandate of almsgiving during the Lenten season and helping our brothers and sisters in need. I hope that through our common effort we will join other parishes and meet our assigned quota. If you are not prepared to make your donation this week feel free to do so next weekend. You may want to take advantage of pledging your donation by completing the cards in the pews. SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH On Thursday, March 19th, we will celebrate the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the patron of the Universal Church. A nine-day novena began on Wednesday, March 10 during the morning Mass. The feast of the parish is an important celebration for our Basilica family. Pope John Paul II granted to our St. Joseph Family and all who attend the church services on March 19 the privilege of obtaining plenary or partial indulgence. To afford all of us the opportunity to come together to the Church on this day we will celebrate a votive Mass of St. Joseph at 7 p.m. We kindly ask all the members of the St. Joseph Polish Women’s Page 3 March 15, 2009 - 15 marzec 2009 r. Club and all ministries to celebrate St. Joseph Day with attendance at the Mass. The social aspect of St. Joseph Day will continue on Saturday, March 21st when we come together again as one family to the school cafeteria to celebrate the burning of the mortgage. On the occasion of St. Patrick’s Day this Tuesday, we wish our Irish brothers and sisters a successful parade and a HAPPY ST. PARTICK’S DAY! BARBECUE DINNER On Saturday, March 21st, all of us will participate in the joyful event, burning of the mortgage, during the Texas Barbecue dinner. This celebration coincides with the festivity of St. Joseph Day. This one-of-a-kind dinner costs only $8 for adults and $5 for children. Please note that the cafeteria has limited seating and you may want to order your tickets as soon as possible to reserve a seat. PILGRIMAGE FROM NEW BRITAIN Once again, people from several parishes in the New Britain CT area will come on a pilgrimage to Saint Joseph Basilica on Sunday, March 22, 2009. The devotion to Saint Joseph is very popular and those individuals every year come to our Basilica on the occasion of his feast day. They will participate in the 11 a.m. Mass, attend adoration at 2 p.m. followed by Gorzkie Zale at 3 p.m. RETREAT Next weekend we will begin our Lenten retreat for the entire parish family. We kindly ask each one of you to encourage your family members, friends and neighbors to come for this spiritual renewal. It is our privilege and obligation to dedicate to God a talent of time year round, but especially in the Lenten season. A Retreat is a spiritual journey and should be preceded by prayer or novena in your particular intention. The days of retreat are a sacred time where the word of God through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit will enrich our life. The retreat in Polish and English will begin on the weekend Masses of March 21/22. The services on Monday evening, March 23rd, will be in English--from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for Religious Education students and parents; at 7 p.m. for all parishioners, especially the various parish ministries. On Tuesday, March 24th, at 7 p.m., the retreat will be in the Polish language, and conclude on Wednesday, March 25th with a bilingual Mass at 7 p.m. To follow the custom of other parishes, the second collection next weekend and each evening of the retreat will be to cover the cost s associated with these spiritual days. Note: Confessions will be heard at 7 a.m. and each evening before and following the services. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE In support of the Pro-Life efforts, our Diocese is uniting with cities from coast to coast during Lent for a simultaneous pro-life mobilization - the nationwide 40 Days for Life campaign. Faithful believers are praying that this effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in America. On Sunday, March 29th, in our Basilica the 9:30 Mass will be dedicated to praying and promoting the efforts to end abortion in our country. Mothers with babies are asked to take part in the liturgy. In our gesture of support for the pro-life movement, may we ask you to bring to church little baby items, such as clothing. The Southbridge Catholic Charities office is in need of items for both boys and girls including preemies, newborn up to 3 months in size, sleep wear, summer clothing for the upcoming season etc. All donations will be most welcome. Please place your donations in boxes located at entrances to the church. ST. Page 4 PARISHIONERS OF ST. ANDREW’S SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL Andrew Bobola Parish. I hope that this commendable effort of the pastor and the parish of St. Andrew Bobola parish will be a catalyst for a new attitude toward Catholic schools. It is worth to note that a number of private individuals are coming forward in various parishes and establishing scholarships in their name to help children to obtain a Catholic education. Such activities were reported in national Catholic newspapers and even in secular papers. Archbishop Werle from Washington, D.C. stated that we must work together to distribute equitably the responsibility for Catholic schools which are the patrimony of the diocese or the parish and should be supported by the diocese and parish. KRONIKA PARAFIALNA TRZECIA NIEDZIELA WIELKIEGO POSTU Wielki Post to czas szczególnej refleksji nad naszym chrześcijańskim życiem. Zachęcamy do licznego udziału we Mszach świętych: rano o godz. 6.30 oraz wieczorem o godz. 7.00 i korzystania z duchowych darów Kościoła. NABOŻEŃSTWA WIELKOPOSTNE Gorzkie Żale – Niedziela, godz. 3.00 p.m. Droga Krzyżowa – Poniedziałek, godz. 6.05 z udziałem uczniów CCD; Piątek, godz. 1:15 z udziałem dzieci szkolnych oraz godz. 7:00 p.m (w j. polskim). Sakrament Pokuty: W soboty – godz. 3:00; Codziennie po Mszy św. o godz. 6.30 rano; W niedziele przed Mszą św. o godz. 11:00. 7:00 wieczorem. Zakończenie rekolekcji we środę, 25 marca o godz. 7:00 wieczorem z nauką w j. polskim i angielskim. W poniedziałek, 23 marca, swoją naukę rekolekcyjną będą mieli uczniowie CCD wraz z rodzicami w godz. 5:30-6:30. PARTNERS IN CHARITY Druga składka dzisiaj przeznaczona jest na diecezjalną akcję „Partners In Charity”, o której informowaliśmy w ostatnia niedzielę. Partners In Charity stwarza nam okazję do wsparcia różnych dzieł charytatywnych prowadzonych przez diecezję.
