Words of Wisdom. The spirit ofwisdom, as we discover in
today's first reading, comes to those who pray for her.
Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of
consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the
Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the
wisdom of God, is "sharper than any two-edged sword."
We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the
word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds.
Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom,
has strong, deep penetrating words for the rich young man
who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound
questions. Just when the young man thought he had done
enough to fulfill God's commands, more was asked of him.
This is no less true for us.
The second collection this weekend is designated for Phase III

Stewardship Note. "Go and sell what you have and give to the
poor; you will then have treasure in heaven. After that come and
follow me. " ( Mark 10:2 1) Following Christ in a consumer society
like ours is not an easy task. As a result of being tainted by our
society, we are trained not to give anything, but to always pay for
what we get; and to expect everyone else to do the same.
Mary Our Mother. Whoever does not wish to have Mary
Immaculate as their Mother will not have Christ as their Brother.

The weekend of October 17/18 is designated as World Mission

must be a Church committed to being 'One Family in Mission.' On
this occasion we unite with Catholics throughout the world in a

WHAT PRICE VALUES?
Youth delinquency across this country is on the rise, quite often
reported in the newspapers and on television. On Tuesday, October
6th, the television reported a heinous crime committed by four
teenage boys. They murdered the mother and attempted to kill her
11-year-old daughter. It happened in a small rural town of 2,000
people in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, near the Massachusetts
border, where people know one another. As was reported by the
residents, some of the boys were emotional, maybe moody and
somewhat rebellious, but generally considered "good boys".
The question is "What does it mean 'good boys "'? Are good boys
capable to kill, with a machete and knives, innocent people and
children? What values were communicated to them or to other
teenagers who give in to such self-destructive activities? In our
contemporary society parents try to do their best but they are busy
with their own work and schools do not always teach values or
form the character. Many young people are the victims of the
mentality of sub-cultural groups to which they belong. Such groups
impose obligations on them, assign a status, and the role one is
expected to play. Sub-cultural groups demand certain conformity
to its social norms. Most investigators agree that cultural patterns
profoundly and widely affect personality development.
How important is the cooperation of parents, school and society
to instill the values in children and teenagers so they could live
successful and fulfilling lives? Who or what is to blame for this
devastating tragedy which is now affecting many families? There
are no shortcuts in providing moral and character forming values
to the young. The sacrifice of time by the parents, and yes, outlay
of money, to provide sound, character forming values is essential.

school spirit, builds community and brings about the formation of
responsible students acting effectively as leaders and involved in
the democratic process.
