Look for Pat Parslow and Dottie Kasierski to take advantage of the opportunity for 31 chances to win various prizes in July Stewardship Note: “Now, I want you to know, my brothers and sisters, that the gospel preached by me is not of human origin.” St. Paul wants us to know that his preaching and in fact his new life is a gift from Jesus. Stewards recognize that everything they have is a gift from God to be used as God intends. TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 9, 2013 You changed my mourning into dancing; O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. -Psalm 30:12,13 HOPE AND LIFE Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. The second collection this week is for Higher Fuel and Energy Costs. Next weekend’s second collection is designated for Oklahoma survivors of natural disasters. CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2013! Page 3 OKLAHOMA DISASTER COLLECTION We all have witnessed the horrific photos and news footage of the destruction in Oklahoma which resulted from several tornados recently. While we prayerfully entrust the souls of those who died to the Lord, we must not lose sight of how we can assist the survivors who, in many cases, have lost everything but the clothing they were wearing. The U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have requested that voluntary collections be taken in parishes before the end of June. Therefore, we have designated the weekend of June 1516 to assist the relief efforts being offered through Catholic Charities USA in the areas most affected. Although we have much in our parish to support, we must also put our “Faith in Action” to assist those in need as a result of these natural disasters. Many of the survivors are people of deep faith who thanked God for the gift of life to continue to be with family and friends and rebuild what they have lost. May we all be encouraged and strengthened by the hope which God imparts to us even when things appear to be most bleak. CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION The traditional outdoor candlelight procession in honor of our Lady of Fatima will be held on Thurs., June13 at 7:00pm. We kindly request the Children of Mary to take part in this beautiful tribute to our Lady wearing their distinctive dress as they carry the statue of the Blessed Mother. We ask the faithful to join the children and the members of the Holy Rosary Sodality in praying the rosary. Flowers at the Blessed Mother altar are in honor of Our Lady of Fatima and given in memory of Felix (Soapy) & Terry Miller by their daughter, Pat Mangen. PARTNERS IN CHARITY We are pleased to report that we have collected $25,031 and exceeded our goal of $25,000 for the Diocesan Partners in Charity Appeal. It is anticipated that the Supreme Court will rule on two important marriage cases by the end of June. In the face of on-going threats against life, marriage and religious freedom, it is important for us to continue to build awareness of these challenges and encourage our people to know the truth and beauty of the Church’s teaching about these fundamental goods to be active witnesses building a culture of life and civilization of love.
