EASTER SUNDAY - April 24, 2011 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. – Colossians 3:4 Feast of Faith - The Eucharist: Food for Resurrection. How do we celebrate Easter, the greatest of our Christian feasts? By doing what we do every Sunday and every day: celebrating the Mass. On the first Easter, as the heartbroken disciples walked the road to Emmaus, the Lord was with them but they did not realize it. They only recognized him “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 22:35). It is the same for us. In the Mass–the breaking of the bread–we meet the risen Lord together. We meet him in each other–for by our baptism into his death and resurrection, we have become members of one body, the Body of Christ. We meet him in his word–in the liturgy the scriptures are proclaimed to us, that they might take root and grow in us. And we meet him in a special way in the Eucharist, the sacrament of his Body and Blood, which is food for resurrection: “whoever eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:51). The Lord is risen indeed, and it is the Risen One who truly presides at this and every Eucharist. WESOLEGO ALLELUJA - HAPPY EASTER The second collection next weekend is directed toward the Diocesan Obligations EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE COLLECTION The second collection this weekend is taken for the Educational Excellence at Saint Joseph School. The majority of our parishioners were educated and formed their character at Saint Joseph’s. Needless to say, they carry many fond memories of this educational institution which made such an impact on their entire life. During the Easter season there are many alumni who are coming home from different states to celebrate Easter. Whether you are a graduate of Saint Joseph School, a visitor or a parishioner, we trust that the quality of education of children is the highest priority in your charitable giving. The students of Saint Joseph School depend on your assistance, need your support and count on your commitment and generosity. The second collection this weekend will be taken by the students of Saint Joseph School. If you are not prepared to make an offering today, you may make your contribution next week. VIGIL OF THE BEATIFICATION OF JOHN PAUL II Across the Catholic world people will commemorate the beatification of John Paul II in various ways. Many of them will watch on television, In many places the telebins are set in churches, cathedrals, basilicas or city corners for people to watch the ceremony from the Vatican. Other parishes have an all-night vigil with prayers and reflections on his life and teaching. It appears that this is a common need to be connected with John Paul II and through him with the transcendent reality. Here at St. Joseph Basilica which has so much memory of John Paul II we will hold the vigil on Saturday, the eve of the beatification, from 7 to 8 p.m. This bilingual paraliturgical prayer service involving adults and children Page 3 24 April 2011 - 24 kwiecien 2011 r. will provide the opportunity to pray to God through the intercession of Pope John Paul II. The St. Joseph Basilica pilgrimage that is going to the Vatican on April 28 will carry with them all our intentions. BINGO We suspended Bingo for the winter months to give us time to reorganize, adjust the program so it would be more beneficial to the school and the parish. We made several changes and adjustments. The new program will be more attractive to the players. The most significant change is the date which will be Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. The chairpersons are Rudy Bergeron and Dick Skrocki. To function properly and effectively, Bingo needs ample and welltrained individuals who could assist the chairpersons on a weekly basis and therefore, a special meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 26 in the St. Joseph School Cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. HARRINGTON HEALTHCARE AT HUBBARD LUNCHEON On Tuesday, April 26th at 12 noon Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard is hosting a free light lunch with a special lecture by Brian d’Angona, M.D., Emergency Medicine Physician. Some topics to be covered include What is a fever and why do children get them; how do you measure a temperature for children of all ages; differences between thermometers; what medications are appropriate; emergency room protocols etc. R.S.V.P. to 508-9498795. All youths in grades 6-12 are invited to go camping at Camp Marshall in Spencer, MA Saturday May 7th from 1 pm to Sunday May 8th until 2 pm. Cost will be determined by the number of people going; the more that attend, the less it will cost each person (it will not be more than $30 per youth and that includes food). Some parent volunteers (you go for free) will be needed to help chaperone the group. Contact Mrs. Valcour if you are interested or if you have any questions. PARTNERS IN CHARITY The Diocese is pleased to report that as of Wednesday noon, the 2011 Partners in Charity Appeal had raised 40.2% of its diocesan goal of $5 million. St. Joseph Basilica has raised $12,578.50 or 50.3% of its goal. Our climb is slow! Times are tough, money is tight, yet the needs of the poor increase daily. If you can stretch out a helping hand, we will be most grateful. Among many human needs that our contributions subsidize the dioceses are the Catholic schools and retired priests. Our school is getting some financial assistance from the Partners in Charity Campaign. Also there are over 60 retired priests, many who worked in our parish e.g. Rev. Peter Hamernik, Rev. Joseph Bielonko. The physical well-being of these priests depends on the quality care which is always associated with money. May we ask for your generosity in the final collection which will be taken on the weekend of May 14/15. – Betty Sabaj and Carolyn Swierzbin, chairpersons CINDERELLA TO BE PERFORMED IN WORCESTER St. Mary Junior/Senior High School is proud to present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on May 6 at 7:30 pm, May 7 at 7:30 pm and May 8 at 2:30 pm in St. Mary School Auditorium, 50 Richland St., Worcester. This will be a great performance. General seating tickets are $10 and reserved seating tickets are $12. Please call 508-753-1170 to order tickets and for more information. Thanks for your support. PRESENTATION ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING What do you know about human trafficking? Sister Connie Gemme, MSOLA will give a presentation on this form of modern day slavery and provide information on how we can help to end it. This presentation will take place in St. George’s Church Hall, 40 Brattle Street, Worcester on Sunday, May 22 at 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public. CONFIRMATION On Friday, April 29, at 7 p.m. the youth of our parish will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in Sacred Heart Church together with the St. Anthony, Sacred Heart and St. Louis students. This is the first common Confirmation of the four parishes in the region. REGISTRATION TO CATHOLIC SCHOOLS Registration to the Catholic School is such a small and inexpensive step and yet it determines the educational future of your youngster. Currently we are accepting registrations for students from Pre-K to Grade 8. We are considering closing the registration to the lower grades due to the popularity of the programs in Pre-K or create a waiting list. There are instances when a vacancy occurs because of job relocation by the parents, nevertheless, this does not happen too often, therefore, anyone considering sending their child to St. Joseph School should call as soon as possible. Science Fair. The Student Science Fair gave the parents, relatives and friends an opportunity to reflect on the vast area of knowledge and expertise which the students presented on the evening of Tuesday, April 12th. It is also indicative how education is progressing because each time the topics are more complicated and challenging. It takes an enormous amount of time for research and expertise to prepare and display a particular topic. We extend our sincere congratulations to our winners: Grade 8-1st prize Kacper Puczydlowski, 2nd prize Alyssa Bronzo, 3rd Artur Lachcik; Grade 7-1st prize Olivia Mason, 2nd Kyle Herst, 3rd Jillian Recko; Grade 61st prize Emily Puchala, 2nd Marina Malki, 3rd Hannah Yash; Grade Page 4 5-1st prize Tomasz Mamro, 2nd Alyssa Brown and Damon Brown, 3rd Kelsey Brown and Tyler Brown. St. Joseph Scholarship. St. Joseph School is now accepting applications for scholarships for the academic year 2011-2012. This important financial aid includes $15,000 from Mr. Richard Nowak of Texas and subsequent donations of other people. If the parents are committed to the best education for their child, St. Joseph School offers financial assistance. The applications are available at the School Office tel. 508-943-0378. National Research confirms that an educational career of a child depends on a solid foundation received in grammar schools.
