THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
June 27, 2010
“No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to
what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”
– Luke 9:62
Follow Faithfully. When Elijah calls
Elisha to follow him, Elisha goes
back, momentarily, to finish some
business at home. But note that he
does not leave the work to be done by
those at home, nor does he plan to
coma back and finish it himself. He
recognizes in Elijah’s call that he
must follow faithfully and not look
back.
Psalm 16 celebrates the loving protection of God for those
who depend on God’s love and mercy. God is our portion
and cup, in a line seen by Christians as a poetic reference to
Eucharist, and God will not abandon us to death and
corruption, but will call us into the Holy Presence forever.
This could be seen as resurrection, something that was not
universally believed in the days before Jesus. We are
assured that if we go forth in confidence to follow God’s
daily call, we will not be shamed or abandoned, but will
find the life we seek.
The second collection this weekend is designated for the
Diocesan Peter’s Pence Collection
Next weekend, the first weekend of the month, the collection will be
taken for the Diocesan Obligations
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
Today our parish participates in the Peter’s Pence Collection for
the Works of the Holy Father. Each year the Holy Father asks us to
help him provide for our neediest brothers and sisters throughout
the world–those who suffer due to war, oppression, and natural
disasters. Join the Holy Father in this act of charity and kindness.
Please pray for the Holy Father and give generously to this special
appeal. Thank you.

God continue to bless the leadership and members of the Sacred

WELCOME FATHER KONSTANTY
We welcome Father Konstanty Pruszynski to our parish for the
summer months as a resident at St. Joseph Basilica. He is a
Canadian citizen and served in Canada for many years as well as
in the Diocese of Brooklyn, New York. He has a couple of months
before his next assignment and we appreciate his help.
SOLEMNITY OF SS PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES
On Tuesday, June 29, we will observe the Solemnity of the
martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul. Peter was appointed by Jesus
as the leader of the Apostles and after the Ascension we find St.
Peter everywhere taking a leading part in the early Church. He took
the initiative of choosing new Apostles to replace Judas. He was
the first to address the jeering crowd bearing testimony to Jesus of
Nazareth. Peter was in Rome during the persecution of Christians
in the reign of Nero. He was advised to leave Rome to save his life
but while leaving Rome he had a vision of Jesus going back to
Rome. He asked the question Quo Vadis Domine – where are you
going Lord?” and Jesus replied “I am going to Rome to die again.”
After this vision Peter returned to Rome where he was crucified
with his head down according to his personal wish.
Saint Paul was by privilege a Roman citizen. He was a zealous
persecutor of Jews who accepted the Christian faith. Converted on
the way to Damascus, he became a famous apostle of pagans, and
covered thousands of miles on a missionary journey to Cypress,
and then to Asia Minor. It is believed that he was executed in the
same year as Saint Peter, however, as a Roman citizen, he was not
crucified but beheaded.
Both Peter and Paul are the main pillars of the Catholic Church
and therefore on June 29 we commemorate their life and
contribution to the Roman Catholic Church.
REFLECTIONS ON THE ANNUAL FESTIVAL
The two-day festival is history! I would like to share with you
some of my reflections. First and foremost, we are gratetul to God
for the beautiful weather, and to the many individuals for their
dedicated work beyond the call of duty, especially the chairpersons
James Davey and Eileen Fanning. Special recognition should be
given to the kitchen chef, Mr. Artie Hunt, who took a week off
from work to do the food prep work, and the treasurer, Barbara
Mazeika.
We noticed an increased number of volunteers. It is also
encouraging that a lot of young people stepped forward to carry on
the festival tradition which speaks well for the future. I am grateful
to the many parishioners who were aware of the privilege and
responsibility of hosting this important festival and participated in
a variety of ways. In particular, I want to thank the St. Joseph
School Band under the direction of Mr. Charles Cook, the school
choir led by Mr. Robert Wojcik, and the Rock Band also under the
direction of Mr. Robert Wojcik.. May God bless all those who
shared their generosity of time.
Festival Reception. On Tuesday, July 6th, all festival chairpersons
and volunteers are invited to a light supper in the school cafeteria
at 6:30 p.m. This will provide us with the opportunity to share our
experiences and express suggestions for next year.
Money Raffle Winners. Congratulations to the following: 1st prize
$5000 F. A. Petrin, Webster; 2nd Prize $1000 Rich LaBaire,
Webster; 3rd prize $500 Frank Markiewicz, Webster; Fourth Prize
$100 T. Hansen, Woodstock Valley.
REPORT FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council spent a considerable amount of time on
evangelization issues to educate those who have been away from
the Church on the meaning of the Mass by sponsoring several
sessions in the Fall. This will be done in conjunction with the
several adjustments to the liturgical celebrations which will take
effect in December 2011. Also the devotion to St. Joseph, patron of
the Universal Church and Saint Joseph Basilica should be
effectively promoted. The 125th celebration of Saint Joseph Basilica
will be celebrated in the year 2012. By that date the entrance to the
church should be addressed, the new stairs, and railing installed,
the bronze doors cleaned and sealed, and the water drainage from
the Maynard St. should be repaired. By that date we should conduct
a census to determine our membership. A brochure on Saint Joseph
Basilica should be printed to respond to the request of many
visitors. The cost of the entire package will be approximately
$175,000. It was decided that a $1000 donation during the course
of one year will be requested from the parishioners to cover the
expenses. The details will be shared with the parishioners at a later
date. Mr. Clem Starosta was appointed chairman of the Jubilee
Committee.
The Parish Council enthusiastically approved the proposed
drawings of the new look for the outside entrance to the church.
You can view the drawings in the main vestibule next to Our Lady
of Czestochowa Chapel.
